"To answer your question about why am I using Total Outlook Converter, I am retiring soon and I
want to keep a copy of my emails in a format which can be read by
Thunderbird, Outlook Express, or similar. I do not have Outlook on my home
computers. So, even though a folder with 1500 files in it looks a bit
cumbersome, it is searchable by Windows Explorer and is better than nothing
if a question comes up (from my old workplace) about something I was
I have converted 2GB of email so far and I have around 2GB to go, I think.
TOC takes its time and chugs through them with only occasional character set
problems in the subject line (Unicode vs not Unicode?) So far, I haven't
seen this in the body of an email message. Attachments seem to survive the
conversion process as well.
I suppose if I was still working, I might use a program like this to back up
my email. Our IT people are supposed to back up all the servers, but I have
heard horror stories of people losing their email during installation of a
new computer. A backup file would allow the user to restore his previous
messages from the old machine, without trusting IT to do it properly."
