What is a DOTX file and what does converting it to TXT actually do?

DOTX is a Microsoft Word XML template file. It stores styles, fonts, placeholder text, macros stubs, and page layout settings used as the starting point when someone creates a new document from the template. Converting to TXT extracts the raw text content — paragraph text, table cell contents, header and footer text, and placeholder labels — and writes it as plain Unicode text. All formatting (bold, colours, column layouts) and all non-text objects (images, SmartArt, OLE objects) are discarded. What remains is the plain words that were in the template.

Will the template's styles and formatting be preserved in the TXT file?

No. TXT is unformatted text; it has no concept of bold, italic, font size, colour, tables, or page layout. Text that was in a table is written out row by row, cell by cell, typically separated by tabs or newlines. Paragraph styles like Heading 1 or Title are not indicated in any way — the text is flat. If preserving visual structure matters, convert to DOCX or PDF instead.

How are placeholder fields like {Author} or content controls handled?

Word template placeholders appear in the TXT output as their literal text — for example, the text string '[Click here to enter text]' or the field code result if the field was pre-filled. Dynamic fields that resolve from document properties (author name, current date) are expanded to whatever value was cached when the template was last saved in Word. If the template was never opened or saved with resolved fields, the field code text is written as-is.

Does the converter handle DOTX files with macros (VBA)?

DOTX files do not contain VBA macros — macro-enabled Word templates use the DOTM extension. A DOTX is guaranteed to be macro-free by the Open XML specification. The online converter processes only the document content and will produce correct TXT output regardless. If you have a DOTM file, the converter strips macro data and extracts the same text content.

What is the maximum file size for the online DOTX to TXT converter?
