MP3 File

File extension .MP3
CategoryAudio File
DescriptionMP3 is the most popular audio file type based on MPEG-1 Layer III compression. Its lossy algorithm was developed in 1991. MP3 codes the sound almost with the same quality, as CD (16-bit stereo), providing compression in size 1 to 10 from the original WAF or AIFF tracks. The quality of MP3 seriously depends on the bitrate. It can be 128 - 256 kbps. Higher bitrates are also supported, but they seriously increase the file size. It is supported by all modern hard- and software players.

OGG File

File extension .OGG
CategoryAudio File
DescriptionOGG files store compressed audio signal. The sound is encoded with Ogg Vorbis compression algorithm. OGG resembles MP3 but provides better sounding compared with MP3 track of the same size. It may contain audio meta data such as information about performer and track parameters. Being a container for storing audio information OGG can contain different sound compression types like FLAC or Speex. OGG file extension may also refer to Salt Lake city game or OriginLab graphic files.

I converted my MP3 game soundtrack library to OGG Vorbis for a Linux-based indie game project — the converter handled batch jobs of 200 files cleanly and the output worked immediately in our SDL audio engine. No licensing headaches with OGG for open-source distribution.

Our small game studio needed all audio assets in OGG to avoid MP3 patent concerns, and this tool converted 450 sound effects in one batch run. The file sizes came out reasonable and the quality was consistent across the whole set.

Works well for converting my personal MP3 collection to OGG for use on my Linux desktop — Rhythmbox plays everything perfectly. I'd like a drag-and-drop batch interface, but the current workflow gets the job done.

MP3 to OGG Converter — FAQ ▼

OGG is a free, open-source audio container format developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation. It most commonly holds Vorbis-encoded audio — a lossy compression codec that delivers better sound quality than MP3 at equivalent bitrates. OGG files end in .ogg or .oga and are widely used in Linux-based systems, open-source games (Minecraft stores its sounds in OGG), and web audio APIs.
Common reasons include: reducing file size for web deployment, using audio in HTML5 games or apps that require OGG, complying with open-source or copyleft licensing requirements that exclude patent-encumbered formats like MP3, and improving playback quality on Linux systems where native OGG support is superior to MP3.
Yes — both MP3 and OGG Vorbis are lossy formats. Converting from one lossy format to another introduces generation loss: the audio is decoded from MP3 and then re-encoded as Vorbis, compounding compression artifacts. If you have the original lossless source (WAV, FLAC, AIFF), always convert from that to OGG rather than from an MP3 copy.
OGG Vorbis operates on a quality scale rather than strict bitrates. For general listening, quality setting 4–6 (approximately 128–192 kbps variable) is comparable to a 192 kbps MP3. For web audio or games, quality 3 (around 112 kbps) is typically sufficient. Since you are converting from MP3, there is no benefit to encoding OGG at a higher quality than the source MP3 bitrate.
Firefox, Chrome, and Opera support OGG Vorbis natively in both HTML5 audio and the Web Audio API. Safari and older Edge versions do not support OGG natively and require a JavaScript fallback. Desktop players that support OGG include VLC, Audacity, Foobar2000, and most Linux media players. Windows Media Player and Apple Music do not support OGG without a codec plugin.
No. OGG is a container format — OGV specifically holds Ogg Theora video, while OGG typically holds Vorbis audio. OPUS is a newer, superior codec also wrapped in the OGG container (as .opus files). OPUS generally outperforms both MP3 and Vorbis at low bitrates and is preferred for VoIP and streaming. The converter targets the classic Vorbis-in-OGG (.ogg) output.
The online converter handles one file at a time. For batch conversion of large MP3 libraries — hundreds or thousands of files — CoolUtils Total Audio Converter processes entire folders in one run, supports drag-and-drop, lets you set quality presets, and preserves your folder structure in the output.

Convert MP3 to OGG Online — Switch to Open-Source Audio Without Losing Your Library

MP3 is the world's most recognized audio format, but OGG Vorbis is its open-source alternative — no patents, better quality per kilobyte, and native support in Linux, web browsers, and open-source games. Converting MP3 to OGG online takes seconds: drop your file, the converter decodes the MPEG Audio Layer III bitstream and re-encodes it as Ogg Vorbis at your chosen quality level, and you download a universally compatible open-format audio file. No software installation, no account required.

What Is an OGG File?

OGG is a free, open-source audio container developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation. It most commonly holds Vorbis-encoded audio — a lossy codec that delivers better sound quality than MP3 at the same bitrate. The format carries no software patents, making it the preferred audio format for Linux distributions, open-source game engines (Minecraft, Godot, Unreal Engine), and the HTML5 Web Audio API.

How MP3 to OGG Conversion Works

The converter decodes the MP3 file's MPEG Audio Layer III bitstream into uncompressed PCM audio samples. The PCM data is then fed into the Ogg Vorbis encoder, which applies psychoacoustic modelling to discard inaudible frequencies before encoding the result into the OGG container. Since both MP3 and Ogg Vorbis are lossy formats, converting between them introduces a small amount of generation loss — for best results, always convert from a lossless source (WAV or FLAC) when one is available.
