PSD File

File extension .PSD
CategoryImage File
DescriptionPSD is a default format for Adobe Photoshop which contains raster graphics in multi-layer structure. Together with PSB format it is the only one that supports all features of Photoshop software. All programs from Adobe package can easily and correctly import PSD files. Thanks to RLE compression the image data is compressed losslessly. Transparency and semitransparency are also supported. PSD downsides are big file size. Format is proprietary that limits the support by third-party programs.

TIFF File

File extension .TIFF, .TIF
CategoryImage File
DescriptionThe TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a widely-used file format for storing digital images, developed by Aldus Corporation (now owned by Adobe Systems). It is a versatile format that supports a wide range of color depths, resolutions, and image types, making it suitable for use in a variety of applications.

TIFF files can contain multiple images, each with their own characteristics such as resolution, compression, and color depth. They can also be uncompressed or compressed using a variety of methods, such as LZW, ZIP, and JPEG compression. Additionally, TIFF files can store metadata such as keywords, descriptions, and copyright information.

One of the key benefits of the TIFF format is its support for high-quality, lossless image compression. This makes it a popular choice for archiving and sharing images, especially in fields such as graphic design, printing, and photography. TIFF files can also support transparent backgrounds, making them ideal for use in web graphics and other applications where transparency is important.

TIFF files can be opened and edited using a wide variety of software programs, including Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, and Microsoft Paint. They are also supported by many operating systems and web browsers.

Overall, the TIFF format is a robust and versatile format for storing digital images. Its ability to support multiple images, high-quality compression, and metadata make it a popular choice for a variety of applications, especially those requiring high-quality images.

PSD to TIFF Converter — Frequently Asked Questions ▼

No. The converter flattens all visible layers — pixel layers, adjustment layers, text layers, smart objects, and blend modes — into a single merged image before writing the TIFF. This is the expected behavior: TIFF is a delivery format, not an editing format. Keep your original PSD if you need to edit layers later.
No. TIFF uses lossless LZW or ZIP compression, and the converter composites the PSD layers without any lossy step. The output TIFF is pixel-identical to what you would see in Photoshop with all layers flattened.
PSD supports RGB, CMYK, Lab, Grayscale, and Duotone. The converter preserves the source color space in the TIFF output. CMYK PSD files produce CMYK TIFF files suitable for offset print workflows. Duotone mode is converted to grayscale or RGB depending on the output settings.
Yes. TIFF is the standard format for image placement in both Adobe InDesign and QuarkXPress. A CMYK TIFF from a PSD file will place correctly in an InDesign layout for offset print production.
The output TIFF matches the bit depth of the source PSD. An 8-bit PSD produces an 8-bit TIFF; a 16-bit PSD produces a 16-bit TIFF. Most print workflows use 8-bit TIFF; 16-bit is available for high-precision scientific and photographic applications.
PSD stores the full layer stack — each layer is a separate data block, potentially adding hundreds of megabytes for complex files. TIFF stores only the flattened merged result, which is significantly smaller. A 500 MB multi-layer PSD might produce a 20–50 MB TIFF.
Yes. The online converter processes multiple PSD files. For production-scale batch conversion — entire Photoshop project folders, overnight processing, server automation — Total Image Converter (Windows, $29.90) handles unlimited batch PSD-to-TIFF conversion with configurable settings.

Convert PSD to TIFF Online — From Photoshop Layers to Print-Ready Image

PSD is Adobe Photoshop's native working format, storing layers, masks, and effects that only Photoshop and a few professional applications can open. TIFF is the lossless image format used in professional print production, prepress, and publishing workflows — compatible with every design tool, print service, and imaging application. Converting PSD to TIFF flattens all layers into a single pixel-perfect image in the format that print shops, publishers, and production studios expect. No Photoshop subscription required for the recipient, and no quality loss in the output.

What Is a TIFF File?

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is the professional print and archival image format, developed by Aldus in 1986. It is the standard delivery format for prepress, editorial photography, scientific imaging, and document archival.

How PSD to TIFF Conversion Works

The converter reads the PSD file structure and composites all visible layers — pixel layers, adjustment layers, text layers, smart objects, and blend modes — into a single merged image. The compositing engine applies each layer's blend mode and opacity from bottom to top of the layer stack, producing the same visual result as the flattened PSD. The merged pixel data is then written into a TIFF container with LZW lossless compression, preserving full bit depth and color accuracy. If the PSD has a transparent background, the alpha channel is carried through to the TIFF output.
