You were sent an .stp file — a 3D part from a supplier, a download from a parts library, or an export from someone else's CAD system — and you need it as a DXF for cutting, drafting, or a 2D tool. Converting STP to DXF pulls the geometry into the DXF format that AutoCAD, 2D CAD software, and cutting machines read, so you can get to work without installing the 3D program the file came from.
An .stp file is a STEP file — the two extensions, .stp and .step, are the same ISO 10303 format, with .stp simply being the shorter spelling commonly seen on Windows. It is a neutral 3D CAD format that stores a part or assembly as solid and surface geometry, used to hand models between different CAD systems without sending a native file. Because almost every CAD program can export STP, it is the format you most often receive from vendors, manufacturers, and online parts catalogs.

The converter reads the 3D geometry stored in the .stp file and writes it out as DXF entities — lines, arcs, and polylines — that 2D CAD and cutting software can open. Since DXF is a 2D drawing format, the practical result is the part's outlines and profiles in a form ready for drafting and fabrication. The output is a standard .dxf file you can open in AutoCAD, LibreCAD, and the software that runs laser, plasma, and waterjet cutters — no 3D CAD program required.
