AAC File

File extension .AAC
CategoryAudio File
DescriptionAAC utilizes lossy compression algo that is now considered as the best data zipping technology for high-quality audio data. This is the last standard of MPEG-2 family. There are 4 types of AAC: HomeboyAAC, Liquifier PRO AAC, AT&T AAC and Astrid/QhartexAAC. The last one surpasses MP4 and VQF formats in terms of size-quality ratio, especially on frequencies higher than 16 kHc. It supports up to 48 channels. Each AAC modification uses its own software for playback and coding sound.

I record podcast masters as 48 kHz WAV and use this converter to produce the AAC delivery files for Apple Podcasts — the output sounds clean at 192 kbps AAC and the batch mode lets me process a full season of 12 episodes in under 5 minutes.

WAV to AAC Converter — Frequently Asked Questions ▼

AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is the MPEG lossy audio codec introduced in 1997 to replace MP3. At the same bitrate AAC sounds clearly better, especially below 192 kbps. It is the native audio format for YouTube, Apple Music, and most modern mobile platforms.
Upload your .wav file using the button above. The converter decodes the raw PCM samples, re-encodes them with the AAC algorithm at a standard streaming bitrate, and produces a .aac file you can download. No software installation is required.
AAC is lossy, so the file is not bit-identical. In practice, at 192 kbps and higher almost no listener can tell the encoded version from the original WAV in a blind test. The result is roughly 10-20x smaller than the source.
Use Total Audio Converter on the desktop. Run: TotalAudioConverter.exe C:\wav_files C:\aac_out /ConvertTo aac /ProcessRecursively — this converts every WAV in the folder and subfolders without opening the GUI.
Online conversion accepts files up to 50 MB. Because WAV is uncompressed, that limit translates to roughly 5 minutes of CD-quality audio or 2 minutes of 24-bit/96 kHz hi-res. Longer files should be converted with Total Audio Converter.
Files you upload are deleted automatically after you download the AAC result. Nothing is indexed, stored, or shared. For confidential recordings, run conversion locally with Total Audio Converter on your own machine.
The online converter defaults to a transparent bitrate for the source — typically 192 kbps for stereo CD-quality audio. For full control over bitrate, channels, and AAC profile (LC, HE-AAC), use the desktop edition of Total Audio Converter.

Convert WAV to AAC — Shrink Uncompressed Audio for Streaming and Mobile

WAV files are perfect for editing but unsuitable for streaming, mobile playback, or distribution — a single uncompressed album can fill a small SD card. AAC compresses the same audio by roughly 10-20x, and at 192-256 kbps almost no listener can tell the difference from the source. Drop your .wav file above.

What Is WAV?

WAV (Waveform Audio File Format) is the uncompressed PCM container Microsoft and IBM published in 1991. Audio samples are written to disk verbatim, with no encoding. A four-minute CD-quality track is about 40 MB; a 24-bit/96 kHz hi-res master is over 200 MB. WAV is the default working format inside DAWs and every audio-editing tool.

What Is AAC?

AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is the MPEG lossy codec introduced around 1997 as the successor to MP3. At the same bitrate AAC sounds clearly better, especially below 192 kbps. It is the default audio codec for YouTube, Apple Music, iTunes Store, Spotify (alongside Vorbis), and almost every mobile platform. Native playback works on iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, in every browser, and in every car stereo built in the last fifteen years.
