| Description | MP3 is the most popular audio file type based on MPEG-1 Layer III compression. Its lossy algorithm was developed in 1991. MP3 codes the sound almost with the same quality, as CD (16-bit stereo), providing compression in size 1 to 10 from the original WAF or AIFF tracks. The quality of MP3 seriously depends on the bitrate. It can be 128 - 256 kbps. Higher bitrates are also supported, but they seriously increase the file size. It is supported by all modern hard- and software players. |

Audio producers and content creators convert WAV to MP3 to shrink large uncompressed recordings into compact files suitable for streaming, podcasting, and device playback.
WAV (Waveform Audio File Format) stores uncompressed pulse-code modulation (PCM) audio. It is the standard format for audio production, recording studios, and professional workflows because it preserves every sample without any codec processing. The downside is size — a one-minute stereo 44.1 kHz 16-bit WAV file is about 10 MB, making WAV impractical for consumer distribution.
MP3 compresses audio using perceptual coding — it removes frequencies the human auditory system is least sensitive to. At 128 kbps (voice and podcast standard) or 320 kbps (music quality), the result is a file 5-10x smaller than WAV with minimal or no perceptible quality difference for the intended use. MP3 is supported by every consumer playback device and platform.
