| Description | The XLSB format is a binary file format used by Microsoft Excel to store spreadsheet data. Unlike the more common XLSX format, which uses XML to represent spreadsheet data, the XLSB format stores data in binary form, resulting in smaller file sizes and faster access times. The XLSB format was introduced with Excel 2007 and has since become a popular choice for users who work with large or complex spreadsheets. Because the format uses binary encoding, it is more efficient at storing large amounts of data than the XML-based XLSX format. This can be particularly beneficial for spreadsheets that contain many rows or columns, or that require complex calculations. In addition to its smaller file size and faster access times, the XLSB format also provides enhanced security features compared to the XLSX format. Because the data is stored in binary form, it is more difficult for unauthorized users to access or modify the data directly. This can be particularly important for users who work with sensitive or confidential data, such as financial or healthcare information. Despite its advantages, there are some limitations to using the XLSB format. Because the format is binary, it cannot be easily edited or modified using a text editor or other software tools. In addition, some third-party software may not be compatible with the XLSB format, which can limit its usefulness in certain situations. Overall, the XLSB format is a powerful and efficient way to store and manage spreadsheet data in Microsoft Excel. Its smaller file sizes, faster access times, and enhanced security features make it an attractive choice for users who need to work with large or complex spreadsheets. |

| Description | XLS is the most popular format for storing table data. It is native Microsoft Excel format with data stored in numbered cells that form columns and rows. The top line and left column of each table contains numbering of each cell that can contain either static or dynamic data that is calculated from formulas. XLS features powerful calculation and charts-building options, as well as rich text formatting. XLS is compatible with numerous table editors such as Calc, PlanMaker, OpenOffice, etc. |

XLSB stores an Excel workbook in a compact binary form. It is fast and small, but not every program reads it — many importers, reporting tools, and older or third-party spreadsheet apps choke on the binary format. Converting XLSB to XLS turns the workbook into the widely supported legacy Excel format that opens in practically any spreadsheet application, so the data is accessible wherever you need it without requiring a current copy of Excel.
XLSB is the Excel Binary Workbook format, introduced with Excel 2007 alongside XLSX. It holds the same content — multiple sheets, formulas, charts, and formatting — but stores it as binary records (the BIFF12 structure) instead of the zipped XML used by XLSX. That makes XLSB smaller on disk and faster to open and save for very large workbooks. The trade-off is compatibility: because the data is binary, tools that happily read XLSX often cannot open XLSB.
| Property | XLSB (.xlsb) | XLS (.xls) |
|---|---|---|
| Introduced | Excel 2007 | Excel 97 |
| Storage | Binary records (BIFF12) | Binary records (BIFF8) |
| Row limit | 1,048,576 | 65,536 |
| File size | Smallest | Larger |
| Support outside Excel | Limited | Very broad |
| Best for | Huge workbooks in Excel | Maximum compatibility |
The converter reads the binary BIFF12 records inside the XLSB workbook — cells, values, formulas, and formatting across every sheet — and rewrites them into the classic XLS (BIFF8) structure. Numbers, dates, and text are preserved, and supported formulas carry over. Note that an XLSB can hold more than a million rows per sheet, while XLS is capped at 65,536; data that fits in the older limit transfers cleanly. The result is a standard .xls workbook that opens in Excel, LibreOffice Calc, and almost any other spreadsheet tool.
The online converter handles one workbook at a time, up to 50 MB. To convert a folder of binary workbooks in a single pass, or to schedule it, use the desktop Total Excel Converter, which reads XLSB natively with no size limit:
TotalExcelConverter.exe C:\Workbooks\*.xlsb /Xls /out C:\Excel\
Switch the flag to /Xlsx for the modern XML format, /Csv to extract plain data, or /Pdf for a fixed report. Running from the command line lets the whole conversion sit in a scheduled .bat script.
