What machines and software read DXF?

DXF is understood by AutoCAD, LibreCAD, FreeCAD, QCAD, and virtually all CAD packages. CNC routers (VCarve, Mach3, LinuxCNC), laser cutters (Lightburn, RDWorks, Epilog Laser), vinyl cutters (Roland CutStudio, Graphtec Studio), and 3D modeling tools (Fusion 360, Blender import) all read DXF. Cricut and Silhouette cutting machines accept DXF via their desktop software.

Are SVG paths and shapes fully converted?

Yes. SVG path elements (straight lines, Bézier curves, arcs), rectangles, circles, ellipses, polygons, and polylines are all converted to equivalent DXF entities (LINE, ARC, LWPOLYLINE, CIRCLE, ELLIPSE, SPLINE). The resulting DXF contains vector geometry, not a rasterized image.

What happens to SVG text elements?

Text elements are converted as-is if the font is embedded or outlined. If the text in the SVG is live (using a system font, not converted to paths), CNC and cutting software may not render the font correctly if it is not installed on the target machine. For reliable machining, convert text to outlines/paths in your SVG editor (Inkscape: Path → Object to Path) before converting to DXF.

Does the converter handle SVG coordinate system differences?

Yes. SVG uses a Y-down coordinate system (origin top-left); DXF uses Y-up (origin bottom-left). The converter flips the Y axis automatically so geometry appears correctly oriented in CAD and CNC software.

Are SVG units and scale preserved?

The converter maps SVG user units (pixels at 96 DPI by default) to DXF drawing units. If your SVG uses physical units (mm, cm, inches specified in the viewBox), those map directly. Check the scale in your CAD or CNC software after import and adjust if the size does not match your intended physical dimensions.

The DXF opens in my CAD software but the geometry looks wrong — what should I check?

Verify the unit system (millimeters vs inches) in your CAD software matches your intended scale. Check that layers are visible (some DXF readers hide all layers except layer 0 by default). If curves appear as many short line segments, enable spline interpretation in your CAD or CNC software settings.

Technical Considerations

Coordinate System

SVG text that references a system font (e.g., font-family="Arial") may not appear correctly in CAD software if that font is not installed. Before converting, convert all text to paths/outlines in your SVG editor:
