VOX format is an optimized audio file type that is mostly used in phone applications. Dialogic VOX supports up to 16-bit audio data and allows compressing it into 4-bit data. This is equal to 4:1 compression. This advantage made possible to save huge amount of audio information in highly compact form. The compression used here is ADPCM algorithm, a standard technology for representing compressed audio information. The file with .vox extension has the following structure:
- 32-byte header
- 10-byte indices
The first two parts describe the file, while the frames contain actual voice data. There can be from 48 to 6500 segments in one file. And each frame can contain different number of bytes, depending on the encoding type.
VOX format definitely cuts audio quality, it supports only monophonic data. Itís impossible to store music or some other polyphonic data in this format. In practice it is used for voice recording and compression. Sometimes it is used in arcade games for sounding. This format is very similar to WAVE with one exception. They have no info about the file stored inside. That is why to play VOX files, user first need to setup sampler rate, channels, etc.
How to open VOX files
For now it is one of outdated audio formats that are not in wide use. This makes reading and sharing such files a problem. Very few applications can open VOX tracks. These are Adobe Audition 3, Xentec Vox Studio, FMJ-Software Awave Studio. However, it can be easily solved. With the help of Total Audio Converter you can export audio tracks from VOX to other formats like MP3, AAC or WMA. In these formats tracks will be easily opened and played on most modern devices.
- VOX to MP3, AAC, WMA, WAV, APE
- VOX to iPod, iPhone, iPad
- VOX to any cell phone
