H264 File

File extension .H264
CategoryVideo File
DescriptionH.264, also known as MPEG-4 AVC (Advanced Video Coding), is a popular video compression format that is widely used for streaming, broadcasting, and video playback. It is designed to offer high-quality video with lower bitrates and file sizes, making it a popular choice for online video platforms, video surveillance, and mobile devices.

One of the key advantages of H.264 is its ability to compress video without sacrificing quality. This is achieved through a process known as "motion estimation", which reduces redundant data in video frames. The result is a smaller file size without compromising image quality, making it ideal for streaming high-definition video content over the internet.

H.264 is supported by a wide range of devices and platforms, including smartphones, tablets, TVs, gaming consoles, and web browsers. It also supports a range of video resolutions, from standard definition to 4K Ultra HD, and can be used for both live streaming and video-on-demand applications.

Another advantage of H.264 is its ability to adapt to different network conditions, such as bandwidth limitations and fluctuations in network speed. This is achieved through features like variable bit rate encoding and multi-pass encoding, which allow the encoder to adjust the bitrate and compression settings based on the available network conditions.

Overall, H.264 is a versatile and widely-used video compression format that offers high-quality video with lower bitrates and file sizes. It is supported by a wide range of devices and platforms, and is an ideal choice for streaming and broadcasting high-definition video content over the internet.

CategoryAudio File
DescriptionMP4 files can contain video and sound data. It is a file container that supports different multimedia content types such as multiple audio streams, subtitles, 2D and 3D image frames. MP4 is also used for streaming media services (online or digital TV). This file type supports the control of transmission speeds for media signal, as well as correcting corrupted frames. Thanks to comparatively low system requirements, MP4 is now the most popular container type for sharing media.

H.264 to MP4 Converter — Frequently Asked Questions ▼

No. The H.264 video stream is placed directly into the MP4 container without re-encoding. This is called stream copy or muxing. There is no quality loss and conversion is very fast.
Raw H.264 elementary streams have no container header, so players cannot determine the duration. Wrapping the stream in MP4 adds this metadata and fixes the display.
No, unless you add an audio track separately. Raw H.264 files contain only video. The MP4 output will be video-only. If you need audio, record it separately and use Total Video Converter to merge both streams.
Security DVRs, NVRs, IP cameras, hardware H.264 encoders, and some encoding pipelines produce .h264 elementary stream files. Consumer smartphones typically produce MP4 directly.
The online converter has a 50 MB file size limit. Security camera footage is typically much larger. Use Total Video Converter, which has no file size limit and supports batch conversion.
Because the video is not re-encoded, conversion is extremely fast — often 10-50x faster than the video duration. A 10-minute file typically converts in under 30 seconds on a modern PC.
Total Video Converter handles standard H.264 elementary streams. Some proprietary IP camera formats use custom containers rather than pure H.264 streams. If the file extension is not .h264, try loading it directly to see if the format is recognized.

Convert H.264 to MP4 — Make Raw H.264 Streams Playable

Raw H.264 files (.h264) come off security cameras, IP cameras, and encoding pipelines as elementary streams — pure video data with no container, no audio track, and no metadata. Most media players refuse to open them because there is nothing to tell the player where frames start, how long the video is, or what the frame rate is. Wrapping the stream in an MP4 container adds all of that information and makes the file play in any player without re-encoding the video.

What Is a Raw H.264 File?

H.264 (also called AVC, MPEG-4 Part 10) is the most widely used video compression standard, deployed in cameras, streaming, Blu-ray, and broadcast since 2003. A raw H.264 file is an elementary stream — it contains only the compressed video NAL units with no wrapping container. There is no duration field, no frame index, no audio, and no timecode. Security cameras, IP cameras, and some hardware encoders produce .h264 files directly. Without a container, media players cannot determine how to seek, how many frames exist, or what the playback speed should be. The file is valid video data, but it is unplayable without being wrapped in a container like MP4 or MKV.

What Is MP4?

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a container format defined by ISO/IEC 14496-12. It stores the H.264 video bitstream alongside metadata: frame rate, duration, resolution, timecode, chapter markers, and optionally audio and subtitle tracks. When you mux a raw H.264 stream into MP4, the video data itself is not re-encoded — it is placed inside the container with the required header information. The resulting file plays in VLC, Windows Media Player, QuickTime, all mobile platforms, and every browser with HTML5 video support. Note: since raw H.264 has no audio, the MP4 output contains video only.
