| Description | MP4 files can contain video and sound data. It is a file container that supports different multimedia content types such as multiple audio streams, subtitles, 2D and 3D image frames. MP4 is also used for streaming media services (online or digital TV). This file type supports the control of transmission speeds for media signal, as well as correcting corrupted frames. Thanks to comparatively low system requirements, MP4 is now the most popular container type for sharing media. |

MOD files come from JVC, Panasonic, and Canon DVD and HDD camcorders from the 2000s and early 2010s — a decade of family videos, events, and recordings that modern software simply won't play. Converting MOD to MP4 transforms that legacy MPEG-2 footage into a universally supported H.264 video that plays on every phone, TV, tablet, and editing app. Drop your .mod file and download an MP4 in seconds — no codec packs, no legacy software required.
MOD is a video format used by JVC, Panasonic, and Canon DVD-RAM and HDD consumer camcorders (roughly 2005–2012). Internally, MOD is an MPEG-2 program stream with AC-3 or MPEG audio — the same encoding used for DVD video. The format was designed for direct recording to disc or hard drive, never intended as a shareable format. Camcorders also create a paired .MOI metadata file alongside each .MOD recording.
| Property | MOD | MP4 |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | MPEG-2 (DVD-era) | H.264 / H.265 (modern) |
| Container | MPEG Program Stream | ISO Base Media File Format |
| Resolution | Standard definition (720×480 NTSC or 720×576 PAL) | Any — SD, HD, 4K |
| Playback on modern devices | No — requires codec pack or legacy player | Universal — all devices and apps |
| Editable in NLE software | No — Premiere, Resolve, iMovie reject MOD | Yes — all major editing applications |
| Upload to YouTube/social media | No — rejected as unsupported format | Yes — preferred upload format |
The converter reads the MOD file's MPEG program stream, demuxes the MPEG-2 video elementary stream and AC-3 or MPEG audio stream, and re-encodes the video as H.264 and the audio as AAC inside an MP4 container. The aspect ratio flag from the MOD header (or the paired MOI file if present) is used to correctly set the display aspect ratio in the output — important for 16:9 footage stored in a 4:3 frame. The resulting MP4 plays correctly on all modern devices with the right aspect ratio preserved.
