What is an HWP file?

HWP is the native document format of Hancom Office (Hangul Word Processor), the standard word processing application in South Korea. It is used for official government documents, corporate reports, and academic submissions throughout Korea. The format is a proprietary binary container with Korean-specific typography extensions. Outside Korea, HWP files are effectively unreadable without Hancom software. What is RTF and why might I choose it over DOCX?

RTF (Rich Text Format) is a document interchange format developed by Microsoft in 1987. It is supported by every word processor, including older applications that pre-date DOCX — WordPad (built into Windows), older versions of Word, legal case management software, and many CMSs that accept RTF imports. RTF stores text, basic formatting (bold, italic, font, size), lists, and tables in a plain-text encoding, making it more universally compatible than DOCX for legacy systems. If your target system is modern (Word 2007+, LibreOffice 5+, Google Docs), DOCX is generally a better choice.

What formatting is preserved when converting HWP to RTF?

Paragraph text, font styles (bold, italic, underline), font names and sizes, paragraph alignment, line spacing, numbered and bulleted lists, and tables are preserved in the RTF output. Korean Hangul text is encoded as Unicode RTF escapes, which RTF-compatible readers interpret correctly. HWP-specific features such as vertical text frames, Korean ruby annotations, and certain complex table structures may be simplified or flattened, as RTF has no equivalents for those constructs.

Will Korean text display correctly in the RTF output?

Yes. RTF supports Unicode character encoding via \uN escape sequences, and the converter uses this encoding for Hangul and other non-ASCII characters. When the RTF file is opened in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice on a system with Korean fonts installed (Malgun Gothic, Batang, or Nanum Gothic), the Hangul renders correctly. On systems without Korean fonts, the text is still present as Unicode but may fall back to a generic font.
