What is an ODT file and why would it contain data worth putting into Excel?

ODT (Open Document Text) is the word-processor format used by LibreOffice Writer, OpenOffice Writer, and Google Docs (when exported). While ODT is primarily a text document format, many ODT files include tables — price lists, invoices, survey results, schedules — that are structurally equivalent to spreadsheet data. Extracting those tables into Excel lets you sort, filter, and calculate on the data rather than reading it in a static document.

Which parts of an ODT file transfer into Excel and which do not?

Tables in the ODT document become rows and columns in the XLSX output. Text content, numbers, and dates in table cells are extracted. Plain paragraphs of body text are placed as text values. Embedded images, decorative borders, ODT-specific styles, headers/footers, and footnotes do not transfer as structured data — they are omitted or simplified in the output.

Do formulas in ODT tables survive the conversion?

ODT supports basic table formulas (sum, average), but these are less common than in a spreadsheet. The converter extracts the displayed cell values rather than live formula expressions. After conversion, the Excel cells contain the computed numbers. If you need to add Excel formulas to the output, do so in Excel after conversion.

What is the maximum ODT file size for the online converter?

The online converter accepts ODT files up to 50 MB. Most text documents are 0.1–2 MB; large ODT files with many embedded images can be bigger. If your document is close to the limit, remove embedded images in LibreOffice Writer before saving, then convert. For files over 50 MB, use the desktop Total Document Converter.

The numbers in my ODT table came out as text in Excel — how do I fix that?

This happens when the ODT uses a locale that formats numbers with a comma as the decimal separator (e.g., 1.234,56) but the converter or Excel expects dot-decimal. After conversion, select the affected column in Excel, run Data > Text to Columns, choose Delimited, then set the decimal separator to match the source. Alternatively, use Find & Replace to swap commas and dots before running calculations.

Can I batch convert multiple ODT documents to Excel?

The online converter processes one file at a time. For batch jobs — converting a folder of exported reports or LibreOffice documents — use the desktop Total Document Converter on Windows 7–11: TotalDocConverter.exe C:\Docs\*.odt /xlsx /out C:\Sheets\.
