MHT File

File extension .MHT
CategoryDocument File
DescriptionMHT (MHTML) is intended for archiving web pages and combining the HTML code and resources - images, animation, audio files, into a single HTML file. These resources are usually represented as external links. The content of resulting files is encoded in the same way as in HTML email messages. MHT files use MIME type encoding. MHT files are directly supported by Internet Explorer and can be opened in it. Also, they can be opened in Firefox and other browsers, providing users install add-on software.

MHT to Excel Converter — Frequently Asked Questions ▼

MHT (MHTML) is a single-file web archive that packages a complete HTML page — including embedded CSS, images, and other assets — into one file using MIME encoding. Browsers (IE, Edge, Opera) and tools like Excel's "Save as Web Page" use this format. Because MHT can save entire financial reports, product catalogues, or dashboards as a single portable file, it often contains HTML tables that are worth extracting into a real spreadsheet.
HTML <table> elements — rows, columns, header cells (<th>), and cell values — convert directly into Excel rows and columns. Anchor text and URLs can be preserved as hyperlinks. Numbers and dates recognized by the auto-detect option become real Excel numeric types rather than text. Decorative images, CSS background gradients, and JavaScript-generated content (charts, dynamic widgets) do not transfer as live data; those remain as images or are omitted.
This happens when the MHT source uses a comma as a decimal separator but the converter is set to dot-decimal, or vice versa. Dates stored as locale-formatted strings face the same issue. Use the decimal separator and date format options in the converter to match the source page's locale. Once the numbers are recognized correctly, Excel's SUM(), AVERAGE(), and pivot functions work on them immediately.
The online converter accepts MHT files up to 50 MB. A saved financial report or product catalogue page is typically 0.5–5 MB. Very large archives — pages that embed many high-resolution screenshots or dozens of embedded charts as Base64 data — can grow large. For files over 50 MB, extract the relevant HTML from the archive first, or use the desktop Total Document Converter for batch processing.
Rowspan and colspan attributes are challenging because Excel cells cannot span rows in the same way HTML can. The converter flattens merged cells: the value appears in the top-left cell of the merged area, and the spanned cells receive empty values. After conversion, use Excel's Merge & Center or Format as Table to recreate any visual grouping you need.
The online converter handles one file at a time. For recurring jobs — such as weekly saved reports or automated browser exports — use the desktop Total Document Converter: TotalDocConverter.exe C:\Reports\*.mht /xlsx /out C:\Spreadsheets\. Add /log to record each conversion result. The desktop version runs silently from a scheduled task or batch script with no user interaction required.

MHT to Excel: turn saved web pages into clean spreadsheets

MHT (or MHTML) is a single-file web archive: it stores HTML plus images, styles, and other assets inside one .mht/.mhtml using MIME parts. That’s convenient for sharing, but not ideal when you need to analyze data. Converting MHT to Excel extracts the tabular content of a saved page and places it into structured worksheets you can filter, sort, and calculate on instantly.

What converts well

Typical workflow

  1. Upload your .mht file (exported from a browser or another tool).
  2. Select Excel (XLSX) as the output format.
  3. Choose options: which tables to include, keep hyperlinks, detect numbers/dates, and text-encoding.
  4. Convert and download the resulting workbook. Each table can go to its own sheet or be appended to one sheet.

Tips for best results

Limitations to know

After conversion

Converting MHT to Excel transforms static, saved web pages into live, analyzable spreadsheets—perfect for reports, catalogues, and dashboards. Upload your archive, pick XLSX, and get a clean workbook ready for pivot tables and charts.
