What is a PAGES file and why does it not open in Excel directly?

PAGES is Apple's proprietary word-processor format used by the Pages app on macOS and iOS. It stores documents as a ZIP archive containing XML layout data, media assets, and metadata. Microsoft Excel has no support for PAGES files — attempting to open one in Excel produces an error or garbled output. The only way to get the data into Excel on Windows or any non-Apple system is to convert it first.

What content from a PAGES document transfers into XLS?

Tables embedded in the Pages document are extracted as rows and columns in the spreadsheet. Text in table cells — numbers, dates, text strings — is placed in the corresponding cells. Text outside tables (body paragraphs, headings) is placed as text values in a single column. Images, drawings, and media are omitted from XLS output; charts become images embedded in the sheet.

Why does XLS have a 65,536 row limit and could my PAGES document exceed it?

XLS is the older Excel 97–2003 binary format with a hard ceiling of 65,536 rows per sheet and 256 columns. If your Pages document contains a very large table that exceeds these limits, the data will be truncated. For documents with large tables, convert to XLSX instead — it supports over 1 million rows and 16,384 columns. Use XLS only when the recipient specifically requires the older format for legacy systems.

Do formulas in Pages tables survive the conversion?

Pages supports basic formulas in table cells, but the converter exports the computed values rather than the formula syntax. The XLS output contains the result of the formula as a static number. If you need formulas to remain editable in Excel, you will need to re-enter them manually after conversion.

What is the maximum PAGES file size for the online converter?

The online converter accepts PAGES files up to 50 MB. Most Pages documents are under 5 MB unless they contain many embedded high-resolution images. If your file exceeds the limit, remove large media in Pages, save, then upload. For files over 50 MB or for batch converting entire document libraries, use the desktop CoolUtils converter on Windows 7–11.
