QIF to XLS Converter — Frequently Asked Questions ▼

QIF is a coded text format that finance software reads, not something you can usefully open in a spreadsheet on its own. Converting it to XLS lays every transaction out as a row you can sort, filter, total, and categorize. It is the standard step when you want to actually work with your transactions — budgeting, reconciliation, expense reports, or tax prep — instead of just importing them into one program.
Each transaction becomes a row, with columns for the date, amount, payee, category, and memo taken from the QIF field codes (D, T, P, L, M). Amounts are stored as numbers so they total correctly, and dates are stored as real Excel date values so the sheet sorts chronologically.
QIF is the older Intuit text format; OFX (and its QFX variant) replaced it with a structured SGML/XML format that carries more detail and a unique ID per transaction. Many banks moved to OFX, but plenty of tools still export QIF. Both convert to a spreadsheet the same way — one transaction per row.
Yes. QIF dates can appear in US (MM/DD/YY) or other layouts depending on the source program; the converter reads the date and stores it as a real Excel date value, so the result sorts chronologically and works in date formulas regardless of the original text format.
XLS is the legacy Excel format (97–2003), needed only for very old software. XLSX is the modern format with smaller files and broad compatibility. If you have the choice, XLSX is usually better, but XLS opens in virtually any spreadsheet program.
The online converter accepts QIF files up to 50 MB, far more than a typical export. For larger archives or to convert several files at once, use the desktop Total Excel Converter — no size limit and full folder support.
The online tool converts one file at a time. For batch work use the desktop Total Excel Converter: TotalExcelConverter.exe C:\Quicken\*.qif /Xls /out C:\Excel\. Add /combine to merge several exports into a single workbook.

Convert QIF to XLS Online — Open Quicken Transactions in Excel

QIF is one of the oldest ways banks and finance programs export transactions, and plenty of tools still produce it — but you cannot open a .qif file in Excel and get a usable table. To review transactions, categorize spending, reconcile an account, or move the data into software that does not read QIF, convert QIF to XLS. Each transaction becomes a spreadsheet row — date, amount, payee, category, memo — ready to sort, filter, and total.

What Is a QIF File?

QIF (Quicken Interchange Format) is a plain-text format created by Intuit for importing and exporting financial transactions, used widely before OFX and QFX took over. Each transaction is a short block of lines, where the first character of each line is a field code — D for date, T for amount, P for payee, M for memo, L for category — and a line containing only ^ marks the end of the entry. Many banks and budgeting tools still offer QIF export for compatibility with older software.

How QIF to XLS Conversion Works

The converter reads the QIF file block by block, using the single-character field codes to map each value to a column — date, amount, payee, category, and memo — and writing one row per transaction up to each ^ separator. Amounts become Excel number cells and dates become real date values, so the sheet totals and sorts correctly. The output is a standard .xls workbook that opens in Excel, LibreOffice Calc, and Google Sheets.

QIF to XLS Use Cases

Batch Convert QIF to XLS with Total Excel Converter

The online converter handles one file at a time, up to 50 MB. To convert a folder of exports in one pass, or to schedule the job, use the desktop Total Excel Converter, which reads QIF natively with no size limit:

TotalExcelConverter.exe C:\Quicken\*.qif /Xls /out C:\Excel\

Switch the flag to /Xlsx for the modern Excel format or /Csv for another system, and add /combine to merge several exports into one workbook. The command line lets the task run from a scheduled .bat script.
