QIF to HTML Converter — Frequently Asked Questions ▼

QIF (Quicken Interchange Format) is a plain-text format developed by Intuit for exporting financial transactions from personal finance and accounting software. Quicken, Microsoft Money (legacy), GnuCash, and many bank portals offer QIF export. The file contains lines prefixed with single-letter codes: D (date), T (amount), P (payee), M (memo), L (category), and ^ (end-of-record). Multiple account types — Bank, Cash, CCard, Invst — can coexist in one file.
The HTML report renders each transaction as a table row with Date, Payee, Memo, Category, and Amount. If your QIF includes a running balance field (B line), an optional Balance column appears. Split transactions — where a single payment is divided across multiple expense categories — appear as indented sub-rows under the parent transaction. Investment entries show Action, Security, Quantity, Price, and Commission columns where those fields are present in the source.
Some QIF exporters represent negative amounts (credits, refunds) using parentheses — e.g., (45.00) instead of -45.00. The HTML normalises these to standard negative numbers. If you see unexpected negatives or positives, check the original export: Quicken and bank portals sometimes differ in their sign convention for credits vs. debits.
Yes. A QIF file can contain multiple account blocks separated by an account header (!Account ... ^). Each account becomes its own clearly labelled section in the HTML with a header showing the account name and type, followed by that account's transactions. Per-section totals appear at the end of each block.
The HTML uses a responsive layout with right-aligned currency columns, zebra-striped rows, and sticky headers — it prints cleanly in a browser using File → Print or can be embedded in an intranet page. For landscape printing of wide tables, set your browser's page orientation to landscape before printing. For a more portable document, consider the QIF-to-PDF converter if a fixed-layout file is needed.
The online converter accepts QIF files up to 50 MB. Most QIF exports — even multi-year account histories — are well under 10 MB because the format is plain text. If your QIF is very large, split the export by year or account in your finance application to produce smaller, faster-loading HTML sections. For automated batch conversion of multiple QIF files, CoolUtils desktop tools support command-line processing.
