SXC is the spreadsheet format from StarOffice and early OpenOffice.org — software discontinued over a decade ago. Modern applications like Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, and Google Sheets do not open SXC without conversion. Converting SXC to Excel XLSX brings the data and formulas into the current standard format, making the content accessible and editable without legacy software.
SXC (StarOffice XML Calc) is the native spreadsheet format of StarOffice (versions 6–7) and early OpenOffice.org (1.0–1.1), predating the OpenDocument standard. StarOffice was Sun Microsystems' commercial office suite, widely deployed in enterprise and government environments in the early 2000s as a low-cost Microsoft Office alternative. When Sun donated the code and the project became OpenOffice.org, the format evolved into ODS (OpenDocument Spreadsheet). SXC files store cell data, formulas, styles, and sheet structure in XML. No currently distributed spreadsheet application saves SXC; the format is exclusively legacy archive material.
XLSX is the Office Open XML spreadsheet format introduced in Microsoft Excel 2007, now the dominant spreadsheet standard. XLSX stores workbooks in a ZIP archive containing XML files for sheets, formulas, styles, and shared strings. It is supported natively by Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Google Sheets, Apple Numbers, and every modern spreadsheet application. Converting SXC to XLSX makes the data accessible in any current environment without legacy StarOffice software.
Cell values, formulas, multiple sheets, and basic cell formatting transfer to XLSX. StarOffice-specific formula functions that have no XLSX equivalent are converted to their closest XLSX counterpart or stored as values. Charts embedded in the SXC may not transfer depending on their type and complexity.
