PDF to DOC Conversion FAQ ▼

Drop the .pdf into the upload area at the top of this page, choose DOC (or DOCX) as the output format, and click Download converted file. The converter rebuilds an editable Word document with paragraphs, fonts, tables, images, and hyperlinks. No registration, no email, no install — works on any device with a browser.
For text-based PDFs, yes — paragraph flow, fonts (or close substitutes), bold / italic / underline, tables, bullet lists, headers, footers, and hyperlinks are reproduced. The tricky cases are heavily designed PDFs (multi-column magazine layouts, floating text boxes overlapping graphics) where Word's flow model can't represent the original exactly. For pixel-perfect re-creation, use the desktop Total PDF Converter.
Yes. When the PDF is a scan or photo of a document with no underlying text layer, the built-in OCR (Optical Character Recognition) engine extracts the text and writes it into the DOC. OCR works best on clean 300 DPI scans of typed or printed text in English and other Latin-script languages; handwritten or low-resolution scans are recognized with reduced accuracy.
DOCX (Office 2007+, OOXML, ISO/IEC 29500) is the modern default and what every current version of Word, LibreOffice, Google Docs, and Pages writes. DOC is the legacy binary format from Word 97-2003 — pick it only if you specifically need to send the file to someone running pre-2007 Office. The page renders identically in both.
Yes. Tabular structures with clear cell borders are reconstructed as native Word tables (rows, columns, merged cells), so you can keep editing them in Word, copy them to Excel, or apply table styles. Tables without borders rely on heuristic detection — they usually convert correctly but may need a quick visual review.
If the PDF is encrypted, you'll be prompted for the password during the conversion. Once you supply it, the document is decrypted in memory, converted to DOC, and the unencrypted source is discarded. The output Word file has no password applied; add one in Word with File → Info → Protect Document if you need it.
OCR supports the major Latin-script languages (English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Turkish, etc.) plus Cyrillic and Greek. For Asian scripts (Chinese, Japanese, Korean), the desktop Total PDF Converter with the OCR add-on gives noticeably better recognition.
Files are uploaded over HTTPS, processed on isolated worker servers, and automatically deleted within one hour of conversion. We never read, share, index, or back up uploaded content. For documents that must never leave your network (legal discovery, HIPAA, GDPR-sensitive data), use the desktop converter so files never go online.
The free online converter accepts PDFs up to 50 MB per file — enough for almost any text-based document and most scanned reports. For larger files (multi-thousand-page archives, dense full-color scans), use the desktop Total PDF Converter, which has no size limit and processes files locally.

Quick Guide: Converting PDF to Word Online

To convert a PDF to an editable Word document: (1) drag the .pdf into the upload box above, (2) select DOC or DOCX as the output format, (3) click Download converted file. The converter rebuilds an editable Word file with paragraphs, fonts, tables, images, headers, and hyperlinks. Built-in OCR turns scanned PDFs into searchable, editable Word documents. Files up to 50 MB, no signup, no Microsoft Office.

Why Convert PDF to Word

Editable Documents Instead of Frozen PDFs

PDF is the right format for distribution — layout is fixed, recipients see exactly what you sent. The wrong format for editing. Adding a paragraph, fixing a typo, updating a price, restructuring a contract: all of it is awkward in a PDF reader and natural in Word. Converting to DOCX puts the document back in the format where editing actually works.

Reusing Content From Old PDFs

Reports, white papers, manuals, internal documentation — the source Word file is often gone (employee left, drive failed, project archive lost), and only the PDF remains. Converting to DOCX recovers an editable copy without re-typing. The text, tables, and structure come back; you spend minutes fixing minor formatting instead of hours retyping.

Scanned PDFs → Searchable Text via OCR

Image-only PDFs (scans of paper documents, photographs of contracts, faxed pages) have no underlying text layer. The built-in OCR engine reads the pixels, recognizes characters, and writes them into the Word file. Result: text you can search, copy, edit, and run through spell-check.

E-Signature Workflows That Need DOCX

Many e-signature platforms (DocuSign, Adobe Sign, HelloSign, PandaDoc) accept Word documents and add signature blocks before sending. Starting from a DOCX rather than a flattened PDF lets the workflow tag fields, add named signers, and merge data automatically.

Translation and Localization

Computer-aided translation tools (SDL Trados, memoQ, Phrase, Lokalise, Crowdin) work on segmented Word or DOCX content, not on PDF. Converting source documents to DOCX is the first step in every professional translation workflow.

Accessibility Remediation

Many PDFs fail accessibility audits (no tagged structure, no alt text, no reading order). The fastest way to produce an accessible version is: convert to DOCX, fix headings / alt text / reading order in Word, then re-export to a properly tagged PDF/UA.

What Survives the Conversion

PDF ElementPreserved?Notes
Paragraph textYesReflows into Word's paragraph model
FontsYesEmbedded fonts kept; substitutes used otherwise
Bold / italic / underlineYesCharacter runs preserved
TablesMostlyBordered tables become native Word tables; borderless tables use heuristic detection
Bullet and numbered listsYesRecognized from indentation and bullet glyphs
Images and figuresYesEmbedded at original resolution
Headers and footersYesMapped to Word's header/footer regions
HyperlinksYesClickable in the resulting DOCX
Multi-column layoutSometimesMagazine-style columns may flatten to single-column flow
Footnotes / endnotesMostlyRecognized from formatting cues, not always linked back
Form fields (AcroForm / XFA)StrippedWord doesn't have a comparable form model
Digital signaturesStrippedSignatures don't translate; re-sign the DOCX if needed
Comments and annotationsMostlyTranslated to Word comments where possible
Scanned text (no text layer)OCRRecognized by the built-in OCR engine

Text PDF vs Scanned PDF: What Determines Quality

Source TypeHow It's ProcessedOutput Quality
Text PDF (born-digital)Text and layout extracted directlyExcellent — near-perfect, tables and styling preserved
Mixed PDF (text + scanned pages)Text extracted from text pages, OCR for scanned pagesVery good for text pages, OCR-quality for scanned
Clean scan (300 DPI, typed)OCR on the entire documentVery good — 98%+ character accuracy on Latin scripts
Low-DPI or photo scanOCR with reduced confidenceAcceptable for body text, weak on small fonts
HandwrittenOCR is not reliable for handwritingLimited — manual transcription is better

If accuracy matters, the desktop Total PDF Converter exposes OCR language packs, training data, and confidence-threshold settings.

How to Convert PDF to Word: Step-by-Step
