HTML vs TIFF: What Is the Difference?

HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is the standard language for web pages. Browsers render HTML on-the-fly, meaning layout depends on screen size, installed fonts, and CSS stylesheets. HTML files are editable, searchable, and lightweight — but they require a browser to display properly and can look different on every device.

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a raster image format widely used in publishing, scanning, faxing, and document archival. TIFF supports multi-page documents, lossless LZW compression, and high bit-depth color. A TIFF image is pixel-perfect — it looks identical on every screen, every printer, and every viewer.

When you convert HTML to TIFF, the converter renders the web page exactly as a browser would and captures the result as a fixed image. The output preserves the full visual layout — text, tables, images, and CSS styling — in a format that is easy to archive, print, or embed in other documents.

How to Convert HTML to TIFF

  • Step 1. Launch Total HTML Converter. The left panel shows a folder tree for quick navigation.
  • Step 2. Browse to the folder that contains your HTML files. The file list in the center displays all HTML, HTM, MHT, and XHTML files.
  • Step 3. Check the files you want to convert. Use Check All to select every file in the folder for batch conversion.
  • Step 4. Click TIFF in the format toolbar at the top of the window.
  • Step 5. In the conversion wizard, set the output DPI, choose TIFF compression (LZW, CCITT, or uncompressed), configure page size, and add watermarks or headers if needed.
  • Step 6. Press Start. The converter renders all selected pages and saves TIFF files to your chosen folder.

Total HTML Converter - HTML to TIFF batch conversion interface

Each HTML file becomes a separate TIFF image. Multi-page HTML documents produce multi-page TIFF files. Original HTML files remain untouched. You can also merge multiple HTML files into a single multi-page TIFF — useful for compiling a set of web pages into one archival document.

Command-Line Conversion

Total HTML Converter includes a command-line interface for converting HTML files without the GUI. Example:

HTMLConverter.exe C:\Pages\report.html C:\Output\report.tiff -c TIFF -DPI 300 -CompressType LZW

You can wrap this command in a .bat file or a scheduled task to automate recurring conversions. This is useful for archiving web content — a nightly script converts updated HTML pages to TIFF images automatically.

Why Use Total HTML Converter?

Green PlusPixel-perfect rendering. Total HTML Converter uses a built-in rendering engine with full CSS support. The output TIFF image matches exactly what you see in a browser — tables, fonts, colors, backgrounds, and layout are all preserved.

Green PlusBatch processing. Select hundreds of HTML files and convert them all to TIFF in a single run. Each file becomes a separate TIFF image, or merge them into one multi-page TIFF. No need to take screenshots one by one.

Green PlusDPI and compression control. Set the output resolution from 72 to 600+ DPI. Choose from LZW, CCITT, ZIP compression, or uncompressed output. High DPI produces sharp images for printing; compression reduces file size for archival storage.

Green PlusWatermarks and headers. Add your company logo, a confidential stamp, or a date watermark to every output page. Position the watermark anywhere and control its opacity. Headers and footers with page numbers are also available.

Green PlusMulti-page TIFF support. HTML documents that span multiple printed pages produce multi-page TIFF files automatically. You can also combine several HTML files into a single TIFF — one file per page — for convenient archival or faxing.

Green Plus15+ output formats. Besides TIFF, convert HTML files to PDF, DOC, XLS, JPEG, PNG, SVG, ODT, RTF, and more — all from the same program.

When Do You Need HTML to TIFF Conversion?

Here are the most common scenarios where converting HTML to TIFF is necessary:
  1. Document archiving. You need to store web pages as fixed images that will not change over time. TIFF preserves the exact visual layout and is accepted by most document management systems and archival standards.
  2. Legal and compliance records. Regulations may require you to keep a visual snapshot of web content at a specific point in time. A TIFF image is tamper-proof and universally readable — unlike HTML, which can be edited or rendered differently.
  3. Print-ready output. You want to print HTML reports, invoices, or receipts on a high-resolution printer. TIFF at 300 DPI with LZW compression delivers sharp, professional output without the formatting surprises that browsers introduce when printing HTML.
  4. Faxing web content. Many fax systems accept multi-page TIFF as their native format. Converting HTML to TIFF lets you fax web-based reports and order confirmations directly — no printing or scanning required.
  5. Embedding in other documents. You need to include a web page snapshot inside a Word document, PowerPoint presentation, or PDF report. A TIFF image can be inserted into virtually any document editor with full visual fidelity.

Rated 4.7/5 based on customer reviews
5 Star

"We capture government web pages as TIFF images for long-term archival. Total HTML Converter processes entire directories of saved HTML files and produces multi-page TIFF at 300 DPI with LZW compression. The CSS rendering is accurate — tables, headers, and embedded images all come through cleanly. We archive about 2,000 pages per quarter this way."

5 Star Katherine Albrecht Digital Preservation Specialist, National Archives

"Our prepress workflow requires TIFF input. We receive product catalogs as HTML pages from clients and need them in TIFF for the print pipeline. Total HTML Converter handles the batch conversion perfectly — correct page sizes, consistent DPI, and the command-line mode integrates with our automated prepress scripts. Saves hours of manual screen capture work."

5 Star Thomas Eriksen Print Production Manager, Nordic Publishing Group

"Regulatory audits require us to preserve client-facing web content as non-editable images. Total HTML Converter turns our saved HTML reports into TIFF files that auditors can review without a browser. The watermark feature adds our compliance stamp to every page automatically. Only wish: an option to set TIFF page orientation per file in batch mode."
