Just like DOCX, this format combines XML and ZIP compression algorithms resulting in smaller file size and therefore more convenient sharing and storage. However, DOCM files contain a VB (Visual Basic) programming code ñ a macro (the “M” in the file name stands for “Macro”), which is potentially dangerous and should be regarded with caution. DOCM files can be opened in Windows 7/8/Vista/XP. If you have downloaded a DOCM file from a source you do not trust, do not open it.

What is the difference between DOCM and DOCX?

Both are Office Open XML formats with nearly identical structure — they use the same ZIP container and the same XML schemas. The single difference is that DOCM files include a vbaProject.bin part containing VBA macros, and their [Content_Types].xml lists the macro-enabled document type. DOCX files have no macro storage and carry a different content type declaration. Stripping the macro part and updating the content type is all that converting DOCM to DOCX requires.

What happens to the VBA macros when I convert DOCM to DOCX?

The macros are removed entirely. The vbaProject.bin embedded binary, which holds all VBA code and the macro project settings, is not written to the DOCX output. If the document relies on macros for form logic, auto-open events, or custom toolbars, those automations will no longer function in the DOCX. All written content, text, tables, images, styles, headers, and footers are preserved.

Why would I convert DOCM to DOCX instead of just opening the DOCM?

Several common reasons: corporate email gateways block DOCM attachments as a security measure; SharePoint and some cloud storage services disable macro-enabled documents by default; recipients using Google Docs, LibreOffice, or mobile Word apps may not be able to run the macros anyway; and audit or compliance policies may require that distributed documents cannot execute code. DOCX is accepted everywhere DOCM is not.

Does conversion preserve formatting, tracked changes, and comments?

Yes. Paragraph styles, character formatting, embedded images, tables, footnotes, tracked changes, comments, and content controls are all part of the document XML and are unaffected by removing the macro component. The converted DOCX looks and behaves identically to the DOCM in all respects except that macros no longer run.

What is the file size limit for the online converter?

The online converter accepts DOCM files up to 50 MB. Standard DOCM files with text and embedded images are typically 1–10 MB. A 50 MB DOCM would need to contain large embedded objects such as high-resolution images or embedded spreadsheets. For files above the limit, use the desktop Total Doc Converter.

Can I convert a batch of DOCM files to DOCX automatically?
