When you switch from Microsoft Outlook to Thunderbird, Apple Mail, or another MBOX-based email client, your Outlook .pst archive cannot be imported directly. Converting PST to MBOX extracts all your emails, folder structure, and metadata into a format the new client understands. No Outlook installation required.
PST (Personal Storage Table) is Microsoft Outlook's proprietary archive format for storing email messages, calendar events, contacts, and tasks locally on disk. PST files are created by Outlook's export function or automatically as local mail archives. The format uses a compound binary structure that can only be reliably read by Outlook and specialized conversion tools. PST files are not portable to non-Microsoft mail clients, which is why migration to MBOX is needed when switching platforms.
MBOX is a text-based email storage format that concatenates all messages in a mailbox into a single file, with each message delimited by a "From " separator line. MBOX is the native format of Mozilla Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Eudora, Postfix, and most Unix mail systems. Because MBOX files are plain text, they can be opened with any text editor, searched with grep, and imported into any MBOX-compatible mail client without proprietary tools.
