WMV (Windows Media Video) was Microsoft's dominant video format through the 2000s — built into Windows Movie Maker, captured by webcams, and burned to DVDs as a standard choice for Windows users. Today it is a legacy format: WMV files play reliably on Windows PCs, but iPhone, Android, most Smart TVs, Mac, and virtually every video editing application handle WMV poorly or not at all. MP4 is the universal successor — the format that plays natively on every device, every platform, and every editing suite. WMV (Windows Media Video) is Microsoft's proprietary video format built around the Windows Media Video codec series (WMV7 through WMV9/VC-1) and packaged in the ASF (Advanced Systems Format) container. Microsoft introduced WMV in 1999 as a streaming-optimized format and embedded it throughout Windows XP, Vista, and 7 — Windows Movie Maker saved to WMV by default, and Windows Media Player was the primary playback application. WMV was also used for DRM-protected downloads from the early Microsoft Zune and MSN Music stores. The format is technically capable but proprietary: outside the Windows ecosystem, WMV support is inconsistent and often requires codec packs or transcoding.

The converter parses the ASF container to extract the WMV video stream and the WMA (Windows Media Audio) audio stream. Since WMV/VC-1 is not natively supported inside an MP4 container, the video is transcoded: the VC-1 bitstream is decoded to raw YUV frames and re-encoded as H.264 at a quality setting that preserves visual fidelity. The WMA audio stream is decoded to PCM and re-encoded as AAC, which is the standard audio codec inside MP4. The transcoding process re-encodes both streams into a new MP4 container with proper interleaving and compatibility metadata for universal playback.
