What is a WPS file?

WPS is the document format Microsoft Works used from 1986 until the suite was discontinued in 2010. Works was Microsoft's lighter, cheaper alternative to Office, bundled with consumer PCs for two decades.

Why can't Word open my old WPS file?

Modern Word reads .wps from Works 6, 7, 8, and 9 but not from Works 1 through 5. Microsoft used to ship a separate converter for older Works files but no longer hosts it. Converting to DOCX bypasses the problem.

Will formatting be preserved?

Yes. Fonts, sizes, colours, bold/italic, alignment, lists, tables, and headers/footers are mapped to their DOCX equivalents. Inline images and clip art come through intact.

What about Works' built-in clip art?

The clip-art images are converted into standard PNG or JPEG images and embedded into the DOCX. They render in Word, LibreOffice, Pages, and Google Docs without the Works clip-art library.

Can I edit the result in Google Docs?
