However, DOCM files contain a VB (Visual Basic) programming code ñ a macro (the “M” in the file name stands for “Macro”), which is potentially dangerous and should be regarded with caution. Why would I convert a DOCM file to XLS?

How does the converter extract tabular data from a DOCM?

The converter reads all tables in the DOCM and writes each table as a contiguous block of rows in the XLS spreadsheet. Each Word table becomes a range of cells with the same column structure. Text outside tables is placed in the sheet as plain text rows. If the DOCM contains multiple tables, each is output sequentially on the same sheet or on separate sheets depending on the converter settings.

What is preserved and what is lost in a DOCM to XLS conversion?

Preserved: table structure, cell text content, and basic numeric values. Lost: Word-specific formatting (paragraph styles, fonts, page layout), images, headers and footers, tracked changes, and VBA macros. Formulas in Word fields are not carried over as Excel formulas — they appear as their last-computed text value. Merged table cells are converted to merged cells in XLS where the format supports it.

Is DOCM to XLS a standard conversion path?

It is a less common but legitimate path when your data lives in Word tables and you need it in a spreadsheet. If the original data was in Excel and was pasted into Word, converting back to XLS recovers the structure. For data that was authored natively in Word (prose tables, formatted reports), expect to do some cleanup in Excel after conversion.

What is the file size limit for the online converter?
