What is the main reason to convert a JPG to BMP?

BMP stores every pixel as raw data with no compression, so it is the preferred format for source assets in Windows GDI graphics programming, legacy printer drivers, certain industrial machine-vision systems, and game sprite editors that read raw pixel buffers.

Will converting JPG to BMP recover lost quality from JPEG compression?

No. The conversion cannot restore data that JPEG compression already discarded. What you get is an artifact-free copy of the current state of the image: the existing JPEG artifacts are preserved in BMP exactly as they appear, but no further quality is lost in the BMP itself. For future editing, saving as BMP prevents additional JPEG degradation from repeated saves.

How much larger will the BMP file be compared to the JPG?

Significantly larger. A 24-bit BMP uses exactly width × height × 3 bytes with no compression (BMP with BI_RGB encoding). A typical 12 MP smartphone photo at 4032×3024 pixels becomes about 35 MB as BMP, versus 3–8 MB as JPEG. This is expected — BMP trades file size for pixel-accurate storage. For archiving large numbers of photos, PNG (lossless but compressed) is more practical; BMP is best for technical workflows that require raw pixel access.
