What is the key difference between JPG and PNG?

JPG uses lossy DCT compression: it discards fine color transitions and introduces 8×8 pixel block artifacts to achieve small file sizes. PNG uses lossless DEFLATE compression: every pixel is stored exactly, with no artifacts. PNG also supports a full alpha channel (per-pixel transparency), which JPG does not support at all. For photographs, the quality difference is small at high JPEG quality settings. For graphics with sharp edges, text, logos, or transparent backgrounds, PNG is clearly superior.

Will converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?

No. Converting from a lossy format to a lossless one does not recover the data that JPEG already discarded. The PNG file will be a perfect lossless copy of the current JPEG — meaning the compression artifacts already in the JPEG are preserved exactly, not smoothed out. The benefit of converting is that no further quality loss occurs in subsequent saves: if you edit and re-save the PNG multiple times, it stays pixel-perfect.

Why is the PNG file larger than the original JPG?

PNG is lossless and typically produces larger files than JPEG for photographic content. A photograph saved as JPG at quality 85 might be 500 KB; the same image as PNG will often be 2–5 MB. This is normal. PNG's lossless compression works well on graphics with flat color regions but less efficiently on photographic gradients. If file size matters more than lossless quality, keep photos as JPG and use PNG only for graphics, logos, and images needing transparency.

Does the converter add a transparent background when converting to PNG?

No. JPG does not support transparency — areas that would be transparent in a graphic are stored as a solid color (usually white). When converting to PNG, those areas remain the same solid color. To make the background transparent in the PNG, you need an image editor to select and delete the background after conversion. The conversion itself faithfully copies every pixel from the JPG.

What is the maximum JPG file size the online converter accepts?

The online converter accepts JPG files up to 50 MB. Standard smartphone photos (4032×3024 px) are 3–8 MB as JPEG and convert quickly. Very high-resolution camera RAW-derived JPEGs or panoramas can reach 30–50 MB. For files larger than 50 MB, downscale in an image editor first, or use the desktop Total Image Converter, which has no file size limit.
