What is an MDB file and why can't most people open it?

MDB is the Microsoft Access database format (Jet/DAO engine, used in Access 97–2003). It stores tables, queries, indexes, and relationships in a proprietary binary container. Opening an MDB requires Microsoft Access, which is only included in certain Microsoft 365 plans and is not bundled with Windows. Most business users, clients, and auditors who receive an MDB file cannot open it without dedicated database software. Converting to DOC lets any Word user read the data immediately.

Which parts of the MDB are exported to the DOC file?

Tables and query results become Word tables with a header row and one record per row. Column names (field labels) appear as table headers. Memo (Long Text) fields are placed as paragraph text within their table cell, preserving line breaks. Number, Date, and Currency fields are formatted according to the locale settings in the source database. Embedded images in OLE Object fields can be extracted and placed next to each record. Forms, reports, macros, and VBA code from Access are not transferred — the conversion focuses on data, not application logic.

Can I export just one specific table from the MDB, not the entire database?

Yes. When you upload an MDB, the converter lets you select which table or saved query to export. Selecting a query is especially useful when you need joined or filtered data — for example, a query that links Orders with Customers and filters by date gives you a concise, ready-to-read document rather than raw normalized tables that require mental joins to interpret.

Dates and currency values look wrong in the DOC — how do I fix this?

Access stores dates and numbers in neutral formats internally; locale formatting is applied at display time. If the MDB was created with US locale settings (MM/DD/YYYY, period decimal separator) and you are expecting European format (DD.MM.YYYY, comma decimal), the output will appear in the source locale. To fix this, open the source MDB in Access, change the field format properties to your preferred locale, and re-export. Alternatively, apply a Find/Replace in Word after conversion.

What is the maximum MDB file size the online converter accepts?

The online converter accepts MDB files up to 50 MB. Access MDB files have a theoretical limit of 2 GB, but in practice most operational MDB databases are well under 50 MB when they contain business records from a single application. Very large MDB files (multi-gigabyte) typically indicate embedded binary attachments in OLE Object fields — exporting only the non-binary tables will produce a file well within the limit.

Can I batch export all tables from multiple MDB databases to DOC automatically?
