EML is the per-email format used by Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird (as exports), Apple Mail, and many other clients. The file is plain RFC 822 text — headers, body, MIME-encoded attachments — with the .eml extension. Each .eml holds exactly one email. Almost every mail client opens EML, but the format is not designed for editing or annotation.
DOC is the binary Microsoft Word document format used from Word 97 through Word 2003. The file holds rich text, fonts, tables, embedded images, and Word-specific structures like tracked changes and comments.
