| Description | EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is an extension for files based on the PostScript language and intended for printers/image setters featuring image processors supporting PostScript. There are two types of EPS files: vector graphic files, which are supported by and can be edited in Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw, etc., and EPS photo files, which can be edited in programs like PhotoShop. For easier viewing, EPS files contain bitmap images, because it would take too complicated vector instructions to draw an image. |

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) remains the required format for many professional print, embroidery, and prepress workflows that predated PDF. Converting your PDF to EPS produces a PostScript vector file that opens in Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, InDesign, and any RIP-based print system — no Acrobat Distiller, no Ghostscript command line required.
EPS (Encapsulated PostScript, Adobe PostScript Level 2, 1987) is a single-page vector graphics format stored as human-readable PostScript language instructions. Unlike PDF, EPS does not support multiple pages, hyperlinks, digital signatures, or encryption. EPS is designed to be embedded inside a larger document (an InDesign layout, a QuarkXPress spread) as a placed asset, rather than viewed as a standalone document.
EPS became the standard for placing logos, illustrations, and vector artwork into print layouts in the late 1980s–2000s. Although PDF has largely replaced EPS in modern workflows, millions of legacy systems still require EPS input.
\includegraphics command.| Property | EPS | |
|---|---|---|
| Pages | Multi-page | Single page only |
| Format type | Binary / compressed | ASCII PostScript text |
| Transparency | Full support (PDF 1.4+) | Flattened (no live transparency) |
| Embedding in documents | Possible but uncommon | Standard use case |
| Vector content | Yes (PDF operators) | Yes (PostScript operators) |
| Raster content | Yes (JPEG, ZIP, JBIG2) | Yes (embedded bitmap) |
| Software support | Universal | Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Inkscape, legacy RIPs |
If your source PDF contains true vector objects (shapes and paths created in Illustrator, Affinity Designer, or InDesign), the EPS output is also vector — scalable to any size without quality loss. If the PDF was created by scanning a document or printing a photo, the EPS will contain a high-resolution embedded raster image, which scales poorly. Check your PDF's origin to know which output to expect.
LaTeX's eps2pdf and \includegraphics workflow is standard in scientific publishing (IEEE, Springer, Elsevier templates). If you have a chart, diagram, or figure as a PDF and need it in EPS for a LaTeX submission, this converter produces a compatible EPS file. Most journal systems accept EPS figure files alongside the LaTeX source code.
