| Description | 123 Lotus is a file format used by the Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet program, which was popular in the 1980s and 1990s. The 123 Lotus format is used for storing data in a tabular format, allowing users to easily organize and manipulate large sets of data. The 123 Lotus format is based on a system of worksheets, which consist of rows and columns that can be used to store and manipulate data. The format includes features such as formulas, macros, and charts, which allow users to perform complex calculations and generate graphical representations of their data. Although the Lotus 1-2-3 program is no longer as widely used as it once was, the 123 Lotus format remains a common file format for older spreadsheets and datasets. While newer spreadsheet programs such as Microsoft Excel have largely supplanted Lotus 1-2-3, many users still maintain legacy datasets in the 123 Lotus format and may need to convert these files to more modern formats in order to use them with newer software. In summary, 123 Lotus is a file format used by the Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet program for storing data in a tabular format. While the program is no longer widely used, the 123 Lotus format remains a common file format for older datasets and may require conversion for use with modern software. |

| Description | XLSX is a format from Office Open XML family, a native MS Excel file type starting from version 2007. As opposite to XLS, this format uses ZIP compression that makes XLSX files smaller in size. Actually XLSX file is an archive of XML-documents. The cells in XLSX table can contain plain text, formulas or graphic elements. XLSX can be read in MS Office 2007 and later, Universal Viewer, OpenOffice, MS Office Excel Viewer, Corel WordPerfect Office. This format doesn’t support macros. |

Lotus 1-2-3 defined spreadsheet computing in the 1980s and early 1990s. Millions of businesses built financial models, budgets, and databases in .123 files — and those files are still sitting in corporate archives, backup tapes, and old network shares. The problem is that no current version of Microsoft Excel or LibreOffice can open the .123 format natively. Converting .123 files to XLSX brings the data back to life in a format that every modern spreadsheet application, accounting system, and BI tool can read, without installing any legacy software.
A .123 file is a spreadsheet saved by Lotus 1-2-3, developed by Lotus Software and released in 1983. It stored cell data, formulas, and formatting in a compact binary structure optimized for DOS memory constraints. Lotus 1-2-3 introduced the A1 cell reference notation and the @-prefix function syntax (@SUM, @IF) that influenced every spreadsheet application that followed. By the mid-1990s Microsoft Excel had largely displaced Lotus, and .123 file support was eventually removed from modern applications.

| Maximum rows (original) | 8,192 rows (Lotus 2.x) | 1,048,576 rows |

| Automation and scripting | Lotus macros (legacy) | VBA, Python (openpyxl), Power Automate |
The converter reads the binary .123 file structure, parsing the record stream that defines cells, formulas, formatting, and sheet layout. Lotus @-prefix formula functions are mapped to their modern Excel equivalents — @SUM becomes SUM(), @AVG becomes AVERAGE(), @IF becomes IF(), and so on. Cell values, number formats, column widths, and row heights are translated to the equivalent XLSX XML structure. The output is a standard .xlsx workbook that Excel, LibreOffice, and Google Sheets can open immediately, without any dependency on Lotus software.
