What is a PXL file and why can't modern Excel open it?

PXL is the native spreadsheet format of Pocket Excel, the mobile spreadsheet app bundled with Windows CE, Pocket PC, and Handheld PC devices from the late 1990s and early 2000s. The format is a compact binary optimised for low-memory devices and is entirely distinct from modern .xls/.xlsx. Excel 2007 and later dropped built-in PXL support, so files from old Pocket PC handheld devices simply fail to open without conversion.

Are all worksheets, formulas, and formatting preserved after conversion?

Multiple worksheets are preserved as separate tabs in the output XLSX. Because PXL is a lightweight format with limited styling, most cells contain computed values rather than live formulas — the converter keeps those values so the data is immediately usable. Basic number formats and column widths are normalised. Rich formula logic that didn't exist in the original PXL will not appear in the XLSX.

My .pxl file fails to open and shows no data — what could be wrong?

Not all .pxl files are Pocket Excel spreadsheets. Some printer drivers and PCL XL raster formats also use the .pxl extension — those are PCL XL (Printer Command Language XL), not spreadsheets, and cannot be converted to XLSX. If you're unsure, open the file in a text editor: a Pocket Excel PXL starts with a recognisable binary header, while a PCL XL file contains printer commands. Only genuine Pocket Excel files will convert successfully.

Date and currency cells look wrong after conversion — how do I fix them?

Pocket Excel used older date serial conventions and region-specific decimal separators. If dates imported as serial numbers, select those cells in Excel and apply a Date format via Format Cells. If currency values show the wrong symbol or decimal, check that your Excel locale matches the region where the original PXL was created. Power Query's Column Type detection can also reparse text-formatted numbers into true numerics.

Is there a file size limit for PXL files in the online converter?

The online converter accepts files up to 50 MB. Pocket Excel files are typically very small — often under 100 KB — because the format was designed for devices with extremely limited storage. The 50 MB limit is more than sufficient for virtually any genuine PXL file.

Can I convert many PXL files from an old device backup in one step?
