| Description | DBF is a standard used for storing and sending/receiving database, and it can be done with the help of a variety of database-oriented programs. Each DBF features a header outlining the file scheme, and so called records arranged in a table-like manner. These records are flagged with a byte supplying the piece of data with a byte mark to distinguish it either as subject to removal or not. In case this mark is a space, the object will remain in the file. The asterisk mark defines the record as subject to deletion. It is not impossible to bring back a deleted element unless it has been commanded to be removed irreversibly. |

| Description | XLSX is a format from Office Open XML family, a native MS Excel file type starting from version 2007. As opposite to XLS, this format uses ZIP compression that makes XLSX files smaller in size. Actually XLSX file is an archive of XML-documents. The cells in XLSX table can contain plain text, formulas or graphic elements. XLSX can be read in MS Office 2007 and later, Universal Viewer, OpenOffice, MS Office Excel Viewer, Corel WordPerfect Office. This format doesn’t support macros. |

DBF is the table format of dBase, the first widely adopted personal computer database management system, introduced in 1980. Over the following two decades, dBase and its descendants — FoxPro, Clipper, Visual FoxPro — powered tens of thousands of business applications: accounting systems, inventory management, HR databases, point-of-sale systems, and municipal record-keeping. These applications are no longer maintained, the software that ran them is gone, but the DBF data files remain — often containing records of irreplaceable business and organizational history. Converting DBF to XLSX migrates this data into the modern Excel Open XML format where it can be analyzed with current tools, integrated into modern databases, and maintained without dependence on 1980s software. The converter also handles the encoding challenge: DBF files from Russian-language and Eastern European systems use cp866 or Windows-1251 character encodings that must be converted to Unicode for correct display in Excel.
DBF (DataBase File) stores tabular data in a fixed-width binary format with a header that defines the table schema — field names, types, and widths. Records follow in sequence, each exactly as wide as the sum of all field widths. The format supports a limited set of data types: Character (fixed-width text), Numeric, Float, Date, Logical (boolean), and Memo (variable-length text stored in a companion .dbt or .fpt file). DBF is also a component of the Esri Shapefile format used in GIS, which packages spatial geometry (.shp), an index (.shx), and attribute data (.dbf) as a set.

| Format era | 1980 — DOS era | 2007 — ISO/IEC 29500 open standard |
| Data types | Character, Numeric, Date, Logical, Memo | Rich — text, numbers, dates, booleans, currency, custom formats |
| Formulas | No | Yes — full Excel formula engine |
| Multiple sheets | No — one table per file | Yes |
| Row limit | 1 billion records (theoretical) | 1,048,576 rows per sheet |
| Software required | dBase / FoxPro (discontinued) | Excel, LibreOffice, Google Sheets — widely available |
| Encoding | Legacy (cp866, Windows-1251, cp852, ISO-8859) | UTF-8 Unicode — universal character support |
| Analytics features | None | Pivot tables, charts, conditional formatting, Power Query |
The converter reads the DBF file header to determine the table schema — field names, types, and widths — and the language driver byte that identifies the character encoding. It then reads each record sequentially, converting text field values from the source encoding (cp866, Windows-1251, cp852, or ISO-8859) to Unicode. Field names become column headers in row 1 of the XLSX output; each DBF record becomes a row. Numeric, Date, and Logical field types are mapped to their XLSX equivalents. Memo fields (stored in companion .dbt or .fpt files, if present) are also read and included as text columns in the output.
