What gets converted when I convert an Excel file to HTML?

The converter processes each worksheet and renders it as an HTML table. Cell values — text, numbers, dates, formulas results — are written as table cell contents. Cell formatting (bold, italic, background colour, text colour, text alignment, borders) is converted to inline CSS styles or CSS classes. Column widths and row heights are approximated in the HTML. Merged cells are converted to HTML colspan and rowspan attributes. The result is a self-contained HTML file that displays the spreadsheet layout in any web browser without requiring Excel.

Are Excel formulas preserved in the HTML output?

Formula results are preserved — the calculated value that Excel computed is written to the HTML cell. The formula itself (e.g., =SUM(B2:B10)) is not written to the HTML; HTML has no equivalent concept. If the Excel file was saved with calculated values cached, those values appear in the output. If formulas reference external workbooks or volatile functions (NOW(), TODAY()) that depend on recalculation, the value in the HTML reflects the last saved calculation in the source file.

Are charts and graphs included in the HTML output?

Charts in Excel (bar, line, pie, scatter, etc.) are rendered as static images embedded in the HTML file. The chart image is a snapshot of the chart's visual appearance at the time of conversion — it is not an interactive or live chart. If your goal is an interactive chart on a web page, you would need to rebuild the chart in a JavaScript charting library (Chart.js, D3.js) using the underlying data, which you can extract from the same Excel file.

How are multiple worksheets handled in the output?

By default, all worksheets in the workbook are converted. Each sheet typically becomes a separate section or HTML table in the output file. If your workbook has many sheets, the resulting HTML can be large. The order of sheets in the HTML follows their tab order in the original workbook. Hidden sheets are not included in the output.

What is the maximum Excel file size the online converter accepts?

The online converter accepts Excel files up to 50 MB. A typical business spreadsheet is well under this limit. Large workbooks with many sheets, thousands of rows, or high-resolution embedded images can reach 20–50 MB. For workbooks above 50 MB, or for converting an entire folder of spreadsheets to HTML, use the desktop Total Excel Converter: TotalExcelConverter.exe C:\Reports\*.xlsx /html /out C:\Web\. It runs on Windows 7–11 and accepts files of any size.

Will the HTML output work in all browsers and be accessible to screen readers?

The converter produces standard HTML tables with inline styles, which render correctly in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. ARIA attributes and semantic table headers (th elements) are included for basic accessibility, so screen readers can navigate the table structure. Very complex multi-level header structures or deeply merged cell layouts may require manual accessibility tuning after conversion. The output does not depend on any JavaScript frameworks — it is plain HTML and CSS.
