| Description | MP3 is the most popular audio file type based on MPEG-1 Layer III compression. Its lossy algorithm was developed in 1991. MP3 codes the sound almost with the same quality, as CD (16-bit stereo), providing compression in size 1 to 10 from the original WAF or AIFF tracks. The quality of MP3 seriously depends on the bitrate. It can be 128 - 256 kbps. Higher bitrates are also supported, but they seriously increase the file size. It is supported by all modern hard- and software players. |

NCM is the proprietary encrypted format used by NetEase Cloud Music (网易云音乐) — one of China's largest streaming platforms — when users download tracks for offline playback. The encryption ties the audio to the NetEase app and your account, making it unplayable outside the official application: you cannot import NCM files into any other player, transfer them to a different device, or back them up without losing access. The underlying audio inside an NCM file is typically high-quality MP3 or AAC — converting NCM to MP3 decrypts and extracts that audio stream, giving you a standard file that plays on every phone, car stereo, and music player without any app dependency.
NCM (NetEase Cloud Music encrypted format) is a proprietary container developed by NetEase to enforce DRM (Digital Rights Management) on downloaded music tracks. When a NetEase Cloud Music user downloads a song for offline playback, the file is saved as .ncm rather than as a standard .mp3 or .aac file. The NCM format wraps the underlying audio stream — typically MP3 at 320 kbps or AAC at 128–192 kbps depending on the user's membership tier — with an AES encryption layer using a key embedded in the file header. The app decrypts the stream during playback, but the decrypted audio cannot be accessed outside the NetEase ecosystem.
| Property | NCM (NetEase Encrypted) | MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer III) |
|---|---|---|
| Encryption | AES DRM — playback restricted to NetEase app | No encryption — open playback everywhere |
| Platform compatibility | NetEase Cloud Music app only | Every device, player, and platform |
| Car stereo / USB playback | Not possible | Universal — all car audio systems |
| Portable MP3 player | Not supported | The native format of portable players |
| DJ / editing software | Not supported | Native import in all DJ and editing tools |
| Audio quality | MP3 320 kbps or AAC 128–192 kbps inside | Same quality after extraction — no re-encoding for MP3 source |
| Metadata | Embedded in NCM header | ID3v2 tags — read by all players |
| Long-term access | Requires active subscription and app | Permanent — no app or account needed |
The converter reads the NCM file header, which contains the encrypted AES key and an RC4-encrypted metadata block. The AES key is decrypted using a fixed key known from the NCM format specification, and the decrypted key is used to initialize an RC4 keystream that decrypts the audio payload. When the underlying audio stream is MP3, the decrypted bitstream is written directly as an MP3 file — no re-encoding, no quality change, bit-identical to the original stream. When the underlying audio is AAC, it is transcoded to MP3 at high bitrate. Metadata (title, artist, album, cover art) is extracted from the decrypted metadata block and written as ID3v2 tags in the output MP3.
