| Description | MP3 is the most popular audio file type based on MPEG-1 Layer III compression. Its lossy algorithm was developed in 1991. MP3 codes the sound almost with the same quality, as CD (16-bit stereo), providing compression in size 1 to 10 from the original WAF or AIFF tracks. AMR files are voice recordings from Android and Nokia phones — narrow-band audio optimized for mobile calls, not music playback. Most computers, media players, and editing tools refuse to open AMR files. Converting AMR to MP3 transforms those phone recordings into a format that plays everywhere, from car stereos to podcast editors.
AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate) is an audio codec developed by Ericsson in 1998 for mobile voice communication. AMR uses variable bitrates (4.75–12.2 kbps) to adapt to network conditions, resulting in very small file sizes at the cost of narrow 8 kHz audio bandwidth — optimized for speech, not music. Android phones save voice memos as AMR-NB (.amr) or AMR-WB (.amr, .3gp) by default. Outside of mobile phones, AMR is rarely supported: Windows Media Player, iTunes, VLC, and most editors cannot open AMR without additional codec packs.
MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer III) is the universally compatible audio format supported natively by every operating system, media player, car stereo, podcast app, and audio editor. Its psychoacoustic compression delivers excellent voice quality at 64–128 kbps — well above AMR's quality ceiling. Converting AMR to MP3 at 128 kbps gives you a file that is larger than the original AMR but plays on any device without special codecs, and can be imported into any audio editing software for transcription, editing, or sharing.
