OGG File

File extension .OGG
CategoryAudio File
DescriptionOGG files store compressed audio signal. The sound is encoded with Ogg Vorbis compression algorithm. OGG resembles MP3 but provides better sounding compared with MP3 track of the same size. It may contain audio meta data such as information about performer and track parameters. Being a container for storing audio information OGG can contain different sound compression types like FLAC or Speex. OGG file extension may also refer to Salt Lake city game or OriginLab graphic files.

MP3 File

File extension .MP3
CategoryAudio File
DescriptionMP3 is the most popular audio file type based on MPEG-1 Layer III compression. Its lossy algorithm was developed in 1991. MP3 codes the sound almost with the same quality, as CD (16-bit stereo), providing compression in size 1 to 10 from the original WAF or AIFF tracks. The quality of MP3 seriously depends on the bitrate. It can be 128 - 256 kbps. Higher bitrates are also supported, but they seriously increase the file size. It is supported by all modern hard- and software players.

OGG to MP3 — Frequently Asked Questions ▼

OGG is a container format developed by Xiph.Org; Vorbis is the audio codec most commonly stored inside it. Together they form a free, open-source alternative to MP3 that offers better audio quality at equivalent bitrates. OGG Vorbis is the standard audio format for Linux desktops, many open-source games (including Minecraft and Godot-based titles), and web audio via HTML5. The compatibility gap exists because Apple historically excluded OGG Vorbis from iOS, macOS, and Safari, and many car stereos, Bluetooth speakers, and portable players predate or omit Vorbis decoding.
Yes — both OGG Vorbis and MP3 are lossy formats, and converting from one lossy format to another always involves a generation loss: the source is decoded from Vorbis, then re-encoded by the LAME MP3 encoder. The degree of quality loss depends on the source bitrate and target bitrate. Converting a high-quality OGG (q7–q9, ~224–320 kbps equivalent) to MP3 at 320 kbps produces minimal audible difference for most listeners.
The converter encodes the output at a high-quality MP3 bitrate that balances file size and listening quality. For archival and sharing where quality matters, 320 kbps CBR is optimal. For general sharing and streaming-compatible files, 192 kbps offers a good balance. If you need a specific bitrate for a streaming platform or podcast host, check the platform's requirements before converting.
Yes — OGG is the standard audio format for many games including Minecraft (music), Godot engine games, and others built on SDL or FMOD. These OGG files are standard Vorbis streams and convert to MP3 without issue. Note that game audio files are often copyrighted — use conversions only for personal archival and backup of games you own.
OGG Vorbis uses Vorbis Comment tags (TITLE, ARTIST, ALBUM, DATE, TRACKNUMBER, GENRE). The converter reads these fields and writes them as ID3v2 tags in the output MP3 — the standard tag format recognized by all MP3 players. Tags including track title, artist name, album, and year should appear correctly in your music player after conversion.
The online converter accepts OGG files up to 50 MB. OGG files are typically compact — a 4-minute song at OGG quality 5 (~160 kbps) runs approximately 4.5 MB — so individual tracks will almost always fit within the limit. For batch conversion of a large music library, Total Audio Converter processes entire folders of OGG files to MP3 in one batch operation.
The online converter handles one file at a time. For converting a full library of OGG files — game soundtracks, Linux music collections, downloaded albums — Total Audio Converter lets you select a folder, set the output format and bitrate once, and convert all files without uploading each one to a web browser.

Convert OGG to MP3 Online — Ogg Vorbis Audio to Universal MP3

OGG Vorbis is the open-source alternative to MP3 — it delivers excellent audio quality at lower bitrates, costs nothing to license, and is the default format for Linux audio systems, open-source games like Minecraft, and many open-media projects. But OGG's openness does not translate to device ubiquity: most car stereos, many Bluetooth speakers, older MP3 players, and some smartphones either reject OGG files outright or require additional apps to play them. MP3 is the one format that plays everywhere, without exception. Converting OGG to MP3 gives you a file that works in every car, on every device, and on every streaming platform — with no compatibility guesswork required.

What Is an OGG File?

OGG is a free, open-source multimedia container format developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation. The most common content inside an OGG container is Vorbis audio — a lossy compression codec also developed by Xiph as a patent-free alternative to MP3. Vorbis achieves comparable or better perceptual quality than MP3 at equivalent bitrates, and OGG Vorbis files are the standard format for audio in open-source games (Minecraft, OpenMW, Battle for Wesnoth), GNU/Linux desktops (PipeWire, PulseAudio defaults), and open media platforms. OGG also supports other codecs including FLAC (lossless), Opus (low-latency voice), Speex (speech), and Theora (video).

How OGG to MP3 Conversion Works

The converter decodes the Ogg Vorbis stream by reading the OGG container's page structure and reconstructing the Vorbis audio packets. The Vorbis decoder reconstructs the time-domain PCM audio signal from the frequency-domain spectral envelope data stored in the file — this is a full decode to uncompressed PCM audio. The decoded PCM stream is then passed to the LAME MP3 encoder, which applies its own psychoacoustic model at the selected output bitrate. Vorbis comment metadata (title, artist, album, track number, album art) is mapped to ID3v2 tags in the output MP3.
