PNG File

File extension .PNG
CategoryImage File
DescriptionPNG images provide lossless compression, that is why the quality of the picture is nice, but the size of the file is huge. Because of it this file format is used by photographers. PNG may have several layers of transparency and even include short text descriptions which help search engines to examine the file. Although PNG was developed to replace GIF and partly other formats, it doesn’t support animation since it can’t contain several images like GIF.

HPGL File

File extension .HPGL, .PLT, .HPGL2, .HGL, .HG, .HPG, .HP, .HP1, .HP2, .HPL
CategoryCAD File
DescriptionHPGL is a language, whose elements form strings, which are directed to a printer and command it to draw linear (not dotted) objects. HPGL files are appreciated for compact size and easy rendering. Each HPGL instruction is represented as a code consisting of two letters and one or several numbers. As a rule, HPGLs contain sets of commands. To name a few, IN launches the drawing operation, CI25 stands for a circle (radius 25 mm); PU10,70 gets the pen up and to the point, which has coordinates 10, 70. There are several utilities out there working on different OSs, which you can use to open these files.

PNG to HPGL Converter — Frequently Asked Questions ▼

Upload your .png file to the converter above and click Convert. The converter traces the raster image into vector plotter commands and writes an HPGL (.plt or .hpg) file ready for download. No software installation or account required.
HPGL (Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language) is the command language developed by HP for pen plotters and still used in many vinyl cutters, cutting plotters, CNC routers, and some CAD output workflows. Commands like PU (pen up), PD (pen down), and PA (pen absolute) move the drawing head along vector paths. A device reading HPGL follows these paths precisely, making it ideal for cutting, plotting, and engraving tasks.
Clean black-and-white line art, logos with crisp edges, technical illustrations, and silhouettes convert well. The conversion involves raster-to-vector tracing — the converter detects edges in the PNG and turns them into HPGL pen paths. Photographic images, gradients, and images with heavy noise produce complex or noisy vector output that requires cleanup before sending to a plotter. Scan your artwork at 300–600 DPI in black and white for best tracing results.
Both are used for plotters and CNC machines, but differently. HPGL is a direct device command stream — you send it straight to a plotter. DXF is an editable CAD format that requires import into CAM software (Lightburn, VCarve, etc.) to generate a toolpath. Use HPGL if your device accepts it natively; use DXF if you need to edit the design in CAD software first.
The online converter accepts PNG files up to 50 MB. For large-format technical drawings scanned at high DPI, the PNG may be large but the resulting HPGL is typically compact. For batch conversion of PNG drawing archives to HPGL, use the desktop Total Image Converter.
The online tool handles one file at a time. For production environments that receive PNG artwork and need to feed an HPGL plotter or cutter, the desktop Total Image Converter supports scripted batch conversion: TotalImageConverter.exe C:\Artwork\*.png /hpgl /out C:\HPGL\. This can be integrated into a hot-folder workflow that automatically prepares cutting files.

Convert PNG to HPGL with Our Online Tool

Converting PNG images to HPGL format is essential for those who work with CNC machines, plotters, or other vector-based systems. The PNG format, while excellent for raster graphics, doesn't provide the necessary data structure for precise machine operations. HPGL, short for Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language, is a standard format for plotter files, allowing for accurate reproduction of designs through commands recognized by plotting devices. Transitioning from PNG to HPGL ensures that your image-based designs are effectively translated into vectors suitable for technical execution.

The benefits of converting PNG to HPGL include improved accuracy in design reproduction and compatibility with industrial machines. By using vector information, HPGL files reduce the risk of resolution loss, ensuring detail and precision. This conversion is crucial for professionals in engineering, manufacturing, and graphic design who require flawless output from their plotting equipment.

Our online PNG to HPGL conversion tool stands out due to its user-friendly interface and quick processing speed. Unlike traditional software requiring installations, our tool is web-based, allowing you to convert your files seamlessly from any device with an internet connection. It ensures high-quality output while maintaining the intricate details of your original designs. Designed with efficiency in mind, it provides an effortless solution for professionals needing consistent results without the hassle of complicated software.

Whether you're a designer looking to prepare your artwork for a plotter or an engineer preparing plans for a CNC machine, our PNG to HPGL converter offers a reliable, accessible, and precise method to meet your needs.
