| Description | XER is the proprietary plain-text export format used by Oracle Primavera P6 to exchange project schedules between P6 databases. A single .xer file stores a full project snapshot: WBS, activities, relationships, resources, calendars, codes, baselines and user-defined fields. The file is tab-delimited with section headers (ERMHDR, %T, %F, %R) and is intended for import/export between P6 Professional, P6 EPPM and compatible planning tools. |

| Description | XLSX is a format from Office Open XML family, a native MS Excel file type starting from version 2007. As opposite to XLS, this format uses ZIP compression that makes XLSX files smaller in size. Actually XLSX file is an archive of XML-documents. The cells in XLSX table can contain plain text, formulas or graphic elements. XLSX can be read in MS Office 2007 and later, Universal Viewer, OpenOffice, MS Office Excel Viewer, Corel WordPerfect Office. This format doesn’t support macros. |

An .xer file is Oracle Primavera P6's project-export format, and only Primavera can read it. That locks your schedule away from anyone without a P6 license — executives, clients, and team members who just need to look at the numbers. Converting XER to XLSX pulls the activities, durations, relationships, resources, and costs into an Excel workbook, so you can review, filter, sort, and report on the schedule without opening Primavera at all.
An .xer file is the native export format of Oracle Primavera P6, the enterprise project-scheduling tool used across construction, engineering, energy, and government programs. A single .xer file carries the full schedule — every activity, its duration and dates, the logic relationships that link tasks together, the resources assigned to them, and the associated costs — stored in Primavera's own proprietary, table-structured text layout. It is the standard way teams hand schedules between Primavera installations. The catch is that the format is readable only by Primavera P6 itself; no spreadsheet, database, or office tool can open it directly.
| Property | Primavera P6 (.xer) | Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Oracle Primavera P6 export | Microsoft Excel workbook |
| Format type | Proprietary table-structured text | Open standard (ISO/IEC 29500, ZIP + XML) |
| Holds | Activities, logic, resources, costs | Any tabular data, formulas, and charts |
| Opens in | Primavera P6 only | Excel, LibreOffice, Google Sheets |
| Audience | Schedulers with a P6 license | Anyone with a spreadsheet application |
| Analysis tools | Built-in P6 functions | Sort, filter, pivot tables, formulas |
The converter reads the .xer file and parses Primavera's internal table structure, where the schedule is stored as linked tables of activities, relationships, resources, and costs. Each set of records is mapped into spreadsheet rows and columns, so activity names, durations, start and finish dates, predecessors, and assigned resources land in clearly labeled cells. The output is a standard .xlsx workbook that opens in Excel, LibreOffice, or Google Sheets, letting you sort by date, filter by activity, and build your own reports — all without a Primavera P6 license.
