An .xer file is Oracle Primavera P6's project-export format, and only Primavera can read it. That locks your schedule away from anyone without a P6 license — executives, clients, and team members who just need to look at the numbers. Converting XER to XLSX pulls the activities, durations, relationships, resources, and costs into an Excel workbook, so you can review, filter, sort, and report on the schedule without opening Primavera at all.
An .xer file is the native export format of Oracle Primavera P6, the enterprise project-scheduling tool used across construction, engineering, energy, and government programs. A single .xer file carries the full schedule — every activity, its duration and dates, the logic relationships that link tasks together, the resources assigned to them, and the associated costs — stored in Primavera's own proprietary, table-structured text layout. It is the standard way teams hand schedules between Primavera installations. The catch is that the format is readable only by Primavera P6 itself; no spreadsheet, database, or office tool can open it directly.
