PDN File

File extension .PDN
CategoryImage File
DescriptionPDN (Paint.NET) is a file format used for saving images created in the Paint.NET image editing software. Paint.NET is a free, open-source image editing program designed for Windows, which offers a range of features and tools for creating and manipulating digital images.

PDN files contain a layered image, which can include multiple layers of images, text, and other design elements. This makes it easy to edit and modify different parts of an image separately, without affecting other parts of the design.

In addition to supporting layered images, PDN also offers a range of other features and tools, such as special effects, filters, and color adjustments. This makes it a versatile and powerful tool for digital image editing and creation.

PDN files can be opened and edited using the Paint.NET software, which is available for free download from the Paint.NET website. The files can also be exported to other image formats, such as JPEG or PNG, for use in other software applications.

Overall, PDN is a useful and flexible file format for creating and editing digital images, particularly for users who need the ability to work with layered images and a range of design elements.

PNG File

File extension .PNG
CategoryImage File
DescriptionPNG images provide lossless compression, that is why the quality of the picture is nice, but the size of the file is huge. Because of it this file format is used by photographers. PNG may have several layers of transparency and even include short text descriptions which help search engines to examine the file. Although PNG was developed to replace GIF and partly other formats, it doesn’t support animation since it can’t contain several images like GIF.

It's good and fast, the only problem is that it can't select multiple images, outside of that, perfect

PDN to PNG — Frequently Asked Questions ▼

Upload your .pdn file to the CoolUtils converter and click Download. The converter reads the Paint.NET layer structure, composites all layers into a single flat image, and outputs a lossless PNG with transparency preserved. No Paint.NET installation required. Files up to 50 MB, no signup.
PDN is the native project format of Paint.NET, the free Windows image editor developed by dotPDN LLC. A PDN file stores a multi-layer image with full editing metadata — each layer is saved with its name, opacity, blend mode (Normal, Multiply, Screen, Overlay, etc.), and visibility state. PDN files are not portable: they only open in Paint.NET and have no support in Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity Photo, browsers, or operating system image viewers.
Yes. The converter composites all visible layers respecting their blend modes and opacity, then writes the result as a PNG with a full alpha channel. Areas that are transparent in the final composite are preserved as transparent in the PNG output. PNG is the appropriate format for preserving transparency; if you need a format without transparency (e.g., for web backgrounds), convert to JPG instead.
The online converter composites all visible layers into a single flattened PNG — the same result as 'Flatten' then 'Save as PNG' in Paint.NET. Individual layer export is not available in the online converter. For per-layer export with script control, use Paint.NET directly or the desktop Total Image Converter.
Both are native layered image formats, but for different applications. PDN is Paint.NET's format — lightweight, Paint.NET-exclusive, not readable by other applications. PSD is Adobe Photoshop's format — widely supported by GIMP, Affinity Photo, Procreate, and others. PDN files cannot be opened in Photoshop; PSD files can be opened in many applications. Converting PDN to PNG gives you a universal flat image that works everywhere.
The online converter processes one file at a time. For batch conversion of Paint.NET project archives — sprite sheets, icon sets, design asset collections — use the desktop Total Image Converter. It processes entire folders in a single run and supports command-line execution for automated asset export pipelines.
The online converter supports files up to 50 MB. PDN files can be significantly larger than the rendered PNG due to multiple stored layers — a file with many large layers may be 20–50 MB. For PDN files exceeding 50 MB, use the desktop Total Image Converter, which has no file size limit.

Convert PDN to PNG Online — Export Paint.NET Layered Files to Standard Images

PDN is Paint.NET's native project format — it stores layers, blend modes, and the full editing history of an image created in this popular free Windows editor. But PDN files open only in Paint.NET. Converting to PNG produces a lossless, fully compatible image that opens in any photo editor, browser, image viewer, or design tool. Drop your .pdn file and get a flat, universally shareable PNG in seconds — no Paint.NET installation required.

What Is a PDN File?

PDN is the native project format of Paint.NET, the free Windows image editor developed by dotPDN LLC. A PDN file stores a multi-layer image with full editing metadata: each layer is saved individually with its name, opacity, blend mode, and visibility state. Layer data is stored in compressed form internally. PDN files preserve the complete non-destructive editing state — you can reopen the file in Paint.NET and continue editing each layer independently.
