| Description | RAW is a generic term referring to a family of image formats containing unprocessed image data and metadata, which is received directly from image sensors of digital image- or motion picture cameras and/or scanners. RAW files are not usable as images and are often referred to as digital negatives. RAW images directly reflect color and light intensity and therefore demonstrate true color picture. In order to print or view a RAW file, it must be converted to a standard raster graphics format (JPEG). Each camera model has its own RAW extension. Formats are differentiated according camera manufacturers' names: .nef (Nickon), .crw (Canon), .srw (Samsung), etc. |

| Description | PNG images provide lossless compression, that is why the quality of the picture is nice, but the size of the file is huge. Because of it this file format is used by photographers. PNG may have several layers of transparency and even include short text descriptions which help search engines to examine the file. Although PNG was developed to replace GIF and partly other formats, it doesn’t support animation since it can’t contain several images like GIF. |

RAW is the generic name for unprocessed camera sensor data files — CR2/CR3 (Canon), NEF (Nikon), ARW (Sony), RAF (Fujifilm), ORF (Olympus), RW2 (Panasonic), DNG (universal), and dozens of other proprietary formats. PNG is the universal lossless image format, compatible with every image editor, browser, and platform. Converting RAW to PNG processes the sensor data and produces a lossless standard file accessible without any camera-brand software or subscription. Full resolution preserved, no quality loss in the output.
Camera RAW files contain the unprocessed output of a digital camera's image sensor, captured before any in-camera processing is applied. Unlike JPEG, which compresses and discards data during capture, RAW stores the full sensor mosaic with no post-processing.
| Property | RAW | PNG |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Proprietary unprocessed sensor data | Lossless raster image (open standard) |
| Bit depth | 12 or 14 bits per channel | 8 or 16 bits per channel |
| Processing | Requires demosaicing and tone mapping | Fully processed — immediately usable |
| Compatibility | Brand-specific software required | Every browser, editor, OS, and platform |
| File size | 15–80 MB per image | 5–30 MB (lossless) |
| Best for | Professional editing and archiving | Lossless delivery, web use, editing pipelines |
The converter detects the specific RAW format (CR2, NEF, ARW, RAF, ORF, RW2, DNG, etc.) from the file header and applies the appropriate decoding routine for that sensor type. The Bayer or X-Trans color filter array data is demosaiced — the single-channel mosaic is interpolated into a full three-channel RGB image using the embedded white balance coefficients and camera color matrix. The resulting calibrated RGB pixel grid is encoded into PNG format using DEFLATE lossless compression. The output is pixel-identical to the processed result any standard RAW processor would produce from the same source with default settings. EXIF metadata (camera, lens, focal length, exposure, GPS) is preserved in the PNG output.
