Which RAW camera formats are supported?

Is the output PNG really lossless?

Yes. The RAW-to-PNG conversion has two steps: demosaicing (which involves some interpolation of the sensor mosaic — this is unavoidable in any RAW conversion) and then DEFLATE lossless compression for PNG encoding. Once the demosaiced RGB image is written to PNG, no further quality loss occurs in the PNG file itself.

What color depth does the PNG output have?

The default output is 8-bit per channel RGB PNG (24-bit total), which is the standard for web use and most editing workflows. The converter processes the 12 or 14-bit RAW data into the 8-bit output range. For 16-bit PNG output (which preserves more of the RAW bit depth), use dedicated RAW processing software like darktable or RawTherapee.

Does the PNG output preserve EXIF metadata?

Yes. Camera model, lens, focal length, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, capture date, and GPS coordinates are preserved in the output PNG's EXIF metadata.

How RAW to PNG Conversion Works

The converter detects the specific RAW format (CR2, NEF, ARW, RAF, ORF, RW2, DNG, etc.) from the file header and applies the appropriate decoding routine for that sensor type. The Bayer or X-Trans color filter array data is demosaiced — the single-channel mosaic is interpolated into a full three-channel RGB image using the embedded white balance coefficients and camera color matrix. The resulting calibrated RGB pixel grid is encoded into PNG format using DEFLATE lossless compression.
