| Description | PNG images provide lossless compression, that is why the quality of the picture is nice, but the size of the file is huge. Because of it this file format is used by photographers. PNG may have several layers of transparency and even include short text descriptions which help search engines to examine the file. Although PNG was developed to replace GIF and partly other formats, it doesn’t support animation since it can’t contain several images like GIF. |

DNG (Digital Negative) is Adobe's open RAW format, used natively by cameras like the Leica M series, DJI drones, and Google Pixel phones, and as a converted archive format from Lightroom. Like all RAW files, DNG stores unprocessed sensor data that requires dedicated RAW software to open — web browsers, email clients, social platforms, and most image editors cannot open DNG directly. PNG is the lossless universal format that everything supports. Converting DNG to PNG applies the embedded camera profile and exposure settings to produce a fully processed, pixel-accurate image in a format that opens anywhere, uploads instantly, and requires no specialist software.
DNG (Digital Negative) was created by Adobe in 2004 as an open, documented alternative to proprietary camera RAW formats (CR2, NEF, ARW, etc.). It is based on TIFF-EP and is publicly documented, making it accessible to any developer without licensing fees.
| Property | DNG | PNG |
|---|---|---|
| Created by | Adobe (2004) — open specification | W3C (1996) — open standard |
| Content | Unprocessed raw sensor data + metadata | Fully processed RGB pixel image |
| Editability | Non-destructive RAW editing (exposure, white balance, etc.) | Fixed pixel values — destructive editing only |
| Compatibility | Requires Adobe Camera Raw, Lightroom, Capture One | Every browser, OS, and image viewer |
| Typical file size | 15–50 MB | 5–20 MB (processed image) |
| Transparency | Not applicable (sensor data) | Full alpha channel support |
| Best for | Post-processing, archival photography | Sharing, web publishing, client delivery |
The converter reads the DNG file using an embedded RAW decoder, applies the camera profile, white balance coefficients, and default tone curve stored in the DNG metadata to demosaic the raw Bayer sensor data into a full-color RGB image. The demosaicing algorithm interpolates color values for each pixel from the surrounding sensor readings. Any lens correction profiles embedded in the DNG are applied to correct vignetting and distortion. The resulting processed RGB image — identical in appearance to how the photo renders in Lightroom at default settings — is then encoded as PNG using DEFLATE lossless compression and saved to disk.
