What is a DXF file?
Autodesk introduced DXF in December 1982 together with AutoCAD 1.0. The DWG format was, and still is, proprietary and binary, so Autodesk published DXF as the readable twin: every object in the drawing written out as pairs of lines, a numeric group code followed by a value. Autodesk keeps the DXF reference public, which is why the format became the common language of 2D CAD.

DXF vs DWG
DWG is the compact binary master used inside AutoCAD. DXF is the exchange copy: larger on disk, sometimes missing AutoCAD-specific objects that other programs would not understand anyway, but readable everywhere. A DXF also carries a version: cutting and embroidery software frequently wants the old R12 DXF, which uses only basic entities, while a DXF saved from a recent AutoCAD may contain objects that a simple reader ignores. If a DXF import comes out empty, exporting again as R12 or R2000 usually fixes it. For 3D solids, CAD systems exchange STEP files rather than DXF.

How do I open a DXF file?
- CAD software. AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, ZWCAD and every other CAD program open DXF directly.
- Free programs. LibreCAD and QCAD are free 2D CAD editors built around DXF. FreeCAD imports DXF for 3D work. Inkscape imports it as vector art.
- Viewers. Autodesk DWG TrueView on Windows and the Autodesk Viewer website display DXF files without editing.
- A text editor. Because DXF is plain text, Notepad opens it. You see group codes and coordinates rather than a picture, which is useful for checking units or the file version in the HEADER section.
