What is a STEP file?
ISO 10303 is a family of standards for describing product data. Part 21 of the standard, ISO 10303-21, defines the clear-text file encoding that everyone calls a STEP file. Open one in a text editor and the first line reads ISO-10303-21;, followed by a HEADER section with the file description and the exporting program, and a DATA section with thousands of numbered entities that define points, curves, surfaces, solids and their relationships.

AP203, AP214 and AP242
A STEP file follows an application protocol that decides what it can carry. AP203 covers configuration-controlled mechanical design and is the classic choice for plain geometry. AP214, developed for the automotive industry, adds colors, layers and more assembly data. AP242, published in 2014, merges both and adds product manufacturing information such as tolerances and annotations. Exporting software lets you pick the protocol; when in doubt, AP214 or AP242 preserves the most.
STEP vs STL vs IGES
STEP stores mathematically exact geometry: a cylinder is a cylinder with a radius, not an approximation. STL stores only a mesh of triangles with no units, colors or part structure, which is fine for 3D printing but useless for machining or redesign. IGES is the older neutral format from the 1980s; it describes surfaces and wireframes and often produces gaps where STEP delivers a watertight solid. That is why suppliers ask for STEP and printers ask for STL. For 2D drawings, the exchange formats are DWG and DXF.
How do I open a STEP file?
- Any professional CAD system. SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor and Fusion, Siemens NX, CATIA, Creo and Onshape import STEP files directly and rebuild them as solid bodies you can measure and modify.
- Free software. FreeCAD opens STEP files on Windows, Mac and Linux and exports them to other formats. Autodesk Fusion has a free personal-use license.
- Viewers. Free viewers such as eDrawings or the Autodesk Viewer website display, rotate and measure STEP models without a CAD installation.
- A text editor. Because the file is ASCII, Notepad shows its contents, but only the header is meaningful to a human.
