What is a WPD file and why can't I open it without WordPerfect?

WPD is the native document format of Corel WordPerfect. It stores text with WordPerfect-specific formatting codes (called "reveal codes"), embedded fonts, and layout data in a binary structure. Modern Windows, macOS, and Linux systems have no built-in WPD viewer, and Microsoft Word's WPD import filter is incomplete — it often drops tables, columns, and custom styles. Converting to PNG produces an image that renders the page exactly as WordPerfect would.

Will the PNG preserve the exact layout of my WordPerfect document?

Yes. Converting to PNG rasterises each page at a fixed resolution, so the output is a pixel-perfect snapshot of the document layout — text position, columns, tables, headers, footers, and embedded images are all locked in place. Unlike converting to DOCX or RTF, nothing reflows or shifts because the PNG is an image, not editable text.

How many pages does a WPD file produce as PNG?

Each page becomes a separate PNG file. A 10-page WordPerfect document produces 10 .png files numbered sequentially. The online converter handles one WPD file per upload (up to 50 MB). For documents with dozens or hundreds of pages — such as legal briefs or large manuals — use the desktop Total Doc Converter, which exports the entire document in one batch operation.

Is any text content preserved in the PNG?

PNG is a raster image format, so the resulting file contains pixels, not selectable text. If you need to search or copy text from the output, you would need to run OCR on the PNG afterwards. If your goal is editable text, consider converting the WPD to a text-based format instead; if your goal is visual fidelity or sharing a document that others can view without software, PNG is the right choice.
