| Description | JPG is the file format for images made by digital cameras and spread throughout the world wide web. Saving in JPG format an image loses its quality, because of the size compression. But at the end you have a much smaller file easy to archive, send, and publish in the web. These are the cases when an image's size matters more than image's quality. Nonetheless, by using professional software you can select the compression degree and so affect the image's quality. |

A TIF file stores image data in full, lossless detail — exactly what professional photographers, scanners, and medical systems need. But a single uncompressed TIF can exceed 70 MB, making it impossible to email, upload, or share without conversion. Converting TIF to JPG compresses that data into a shareable image that opens on every device. Drop your .tif file, set the quality level, and download a JPG in seconds. Multi-page TIFs are automatically split into individual JPG files per page.
TIF (Tagged Image File Format, also TIFF) is a lossless raster image format developed by Aldus and Adobe. It stores uncompressed or losslessly compressed image data at full bit depth — 8-bit, 16-bit, or 32-bit per channel — and supports multiple color spaces including RGB, CMYK, and LAB. TIF is the standard format for professional photography, scanned documents, medical imaging, geographic maps, and print prepress work.
| Property | TIF | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossless (LZW, ZIP) or uncompressed | Lossy (DCT) — quality adjustable |
| File size | Very large — 20–140 MB typical for photos | Small — 2–15 MB typical for photos |
| Bit depth | 8, 16, or 32 bits per channel | 8 bits per channel only |
| Multi-page support | Yes — multiple frames in one file | No — single image only |
| Universal viewer support | Limited — many viewers lack multi-page TIF support | Universal — every browser, OS, and app |
| Best use | Archiving, printing, editing masters | Web, email, sharing, display |
The converter reads the TIF file's structure, decodes each image frame (including LZW, ZIP, CCITT Group 3/4 fax, and JPEG-in-TIFF compression variants), and converts the color space from CMYK or LAB to RGB if needed. 16-bit and 32-bit TIF data is mapped to 8-bit for JPG output. Each page or frame in a multi-page TIF becomes a separate numbered JPG file. The output JPG compression level controls the quality-to-size trade-off — 85% quality is recommended for most uses.
