| Description | HEIF, which stands for High Efficiency Image Format, is a modern image format that offers several advantages over traditional formats such as JPEG. HEIF images are smaller in size while retaining high image quality, making them ideal for use on websites and mobile devices. Additionally, HEIF supports more advanced features such as High Dynamic Range (HDR) and 10-bit color depth, allowing for more vibrant and lifelike images. One of the key benefits of HEIF is its ability to store multiple images and even video within a single file. This is achieved through the use of a container format that can hold both images and metadata such as camera settings and GPS data. This makes it easier to manage and share collections of photos and videos. Another advantage of HEIF is its support for advanced compression techniques such as HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), which is used to compress video in 4K and higher resolutions. This means that HEIF can store high-quality video at a smaller file size than traditional formats. Despite its many advantages, HEIF is not yet widely adopted by all devices and software. However, with the growing popularity of mobile devices and the need for smaller image and video files, it is likely that HEIF will become more prevalent in the future. As such, it is worth considering using HEIF for your images and videos to future-proof your content and take advantage of its many benefits. |

| Description | JPG is the file format for images made by digital cameras and spread throughout the world wide web. Saving in JPG format an image loses its quality, because of the size compression. But at the end you have a much smaller file easy to archive, send, and publish in the web. These are the cases when an image's size matters more than image's quality. Nonetheless, by using professional software you can select the compression degree and so affect the image's quality. |

Since iOS 11, iPhones and iPads capture photos in HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) by default. HEIF produces smaller files at the same visual quality as JPEG — but the format is supported by almost nothing outside the Apple ecosystem. Windows without the HEIF codec installed, most Android apps, web upload forms, social media platforms, and professional image software either refuse the file or display a broken preview. Converting HEIF to JPG produces a universally compatible image that opens everywhere. Drop your .heic or .heif file above and download a JPEG in seconds.
HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) is a container standard developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and adopted by Apple in iOS 11 (2017). It uses HEVC (H.265) compression — the same codec as 4K video — to store still images. A typical iPhone photo in HEIF is 2–3 MB; the equivalent JPEG is 4–6 MB. HEIC is Apple's specific file extension for HEIF files containing a single image; HEIFS is used for image sequences.
macOS High Sierra (10.13) and later open HEIF natively. Windows 10/11 require the free "HEIF Image Extensions" codec from the Microsoft Store — which many users don't have installed. Android added HEIF support in Android 9 Pie for capture, but reading .heic files varies by app and manufacturer. Web browsers do not support HEIF. Most professional photo editors (Adobe Photoshop pre-2019, GIMP, older Lightroom versions) also reject HEIF without a plugin.

The desktop Total Image Converter converts entire iPhone photo libraries from HEIF to JPG automatically:
TotalImageConverter.exe C:\iPhone_Photos\*.heic /jpg /out C:\JPG_Photos\
This converts every .heic file in the folder to JPG in one pass. Add /quality 90 to set JPEG compression level, or /keepExif to preserve GPS coordinates, camera settings, and capture date. Useful for processing iPhone backups, travel photo collections, or any workflow that regularly receives HEIC files from Apple devices.
