JP2 File

File extension .JPF, .JP2
CategoryImage File
DescriptionJPEG2000 is an update to JPEG format that provides better compression rates, lossless compression support, up to 24 bit color depth. It unites a family of formats such as JP2, JPM, JPX, MJ2. Compared to JPEG, compression used in JPEG2000 provides smoother image within the same file size. Due to using wavelets on high compression levels there are no block grid 8x8 pixels. It also supports progressive compression that makes the picture cleaner during the load (blurred image turns clear).

JPG File

File extension .JPG, .JPEG, .JPE, .JFIF, .JFI
CategoryImage File
DescriptionJPG is the file format for images made by digital cameras and spread throughout the world wide web. Saving in JPG format an image loses its quality, because of the size compression. But at the end you have a much smaller file easy to archive, send, and publish in the web. These are the cases when an image's size matters more than image's quality. Nonetheless, by using professional software you can select the compression degree and so affect the image's quality.

JPF to JPG Converter — Frequently Asked Questions ▼

Upload your .jpf file to the CoolUtils converter and click Download. The converter decodes the JPEG 2000 Extended image data, decompresses the wavelet-based content, and writes a standard JPEG file. No specialist software required. Files up to 50 MB, no signup.
JPF (JPEG 2000 Extended, file extension .jpf or .jpx) is part of the JPEG 2000 family defined by ISO/IEC 15444-2. It uses wavelet compression, which produces better image quality than standard JPEG at the same file size, and supports lossless mode. Despite its technical advantages, JPEG 2000 was largely rejected by consumer software — browsers, photo apps, and image editors do not support JPF natively. It remains in use in medical imaging (DICOM), digital cinema (DCI), government archives, and satellite imagery.
JPEG conversion is lossy — the output JPEG applies DCT compression on top of the already-decoded JPEG 2000 image. For typical viewing purposes at standard quality settings the difference is negligible. For workflows requiring lossless output, convert JPF to PNG instead, which preserves every pixel without recompression.
JPEG 2000 uses wavelet (DWT) compression, which avoids the blocky artifacts that appear in JPEG at high compression ratios. The tradeoff was adoption: JPEG was already universal in 2000 when JPEG 2000 launched, browser vendors never added native support, and the patent licensing situation deterred early adoption. The original JPEG standard — despite being technically inferior — won by incumbency.
JPEG 2000 files appear most commonly in medical imaging (DICOM medical scanners), digital cinema (DCI-compliant movie files), national archive and library digitization projects, geospatial and satellite imagery platforms, and some high-end professional cameras. Standard consumer cameras and smartphones do not produce JPF files.
The online converter processes one file at a time. For batch conversion of JPEG 2000 image archives — medical imaging exports, satellite imagery datasets, government digitization projects — use the desktop Total Image Converter. It processes entire folders in a single run and supports command-line execution for automated pipelines.
The online converter supports files up to 50 MB. High-resolution JPEG 2000 images from medical scanners or satellite imagery can be large. For files exceeding 50 MB, use the desktop Total Image Converter, which has no file size limit.

Convert JPF to JPG Online — JPEG 2000 Extended to Standard JPEG

JPF files are images in the JPEG 2000 Extended format — a technically superior compression standard that never achieved mainstream adoption. Despite better image quality at the same file size, JPEG 2000 variants including JPF are poorly supported by browsers, photo apps, and image editors. Converting JPF to JPG makes the image instantly compatible with every device, every platform, and every application that handles photographs. No quality loss for typical viewing purposes.

What Is a JPF File?

JPF (also written JP2 or J2K) is part of the JPEG 2000 family, defined by ISO/IEC 15444. The Extended format (.jpf / .jpx) adds features beyond the base JP2 format including multiple composition layers, animation support, and extended metadata. JPEG 2000 was designed in 2000 as a replacement for the original JPEG standard, offering better compression efficiency and lossless mode, but it was largely rejected by the consumer software market.
