XPS is Microsoft's document format from 2006. Windows has a built-in XPS viewer, but macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android cannot open XPS files natively. JPG is the universal image format that opens on every device and platform. Convert your XPS to JPG and share it anywhere — no XPS viewer required.
XPS (XML Paper Specification) is Microsoft's page description format, introduced with Windows Vista in 2006. It was designed as Microsoft's alternative to PDF — fixed-layout, device-independent, based on XAML markup inside a ZIP container. Windows includes a built-in XPS viewer and XPS print support, so the format works well within Windows-only environments.
Outside Windows, XPS support is nearly nonexistent. macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android have no native XPS viewer. Most non-Microsoft browsers cannot open XPS files. By 2010 it was clear that PDF had won the portable document format war, and XPS was largely superseded. However, many organizations that standardized on XPS for document archiving in the 2006–2015 period still have large XPS archives that need to be accessed and shared today.
JPG (JPEG) is the most widely supported image format in existence. Every device, operating system, browser, app, and social platform can display a JPG image without any special software. It uses lossy compression that produces small file sizes at visually acceptable quality — typically 80–95% quality settings balance sharpness and size well for document images.
Converting an XPS document to JPG produces one JPG image per page. Recipients can view each page as an image on any device, embed it in presentations, attach it to emails, upload it to web forms, or print it — all without needing to know what XPS is or having Windows installed. For multi-page XPS documents, a PDF conversion may be preferable, but for single-page documents or individual pages, JPG is the fastest path to universal accessibility.

To convert an entire folder of XPS files to JPG with the desktop converter:

This converts every XPS in the source folder and subfolders, producing one JPG per page.
